About to smash my computer up

Have spent 300 hundred pound upgrading my computer and am having worse framerates than before. The more add ons im installing the slower its getting. Got a 3ghz dual core processor xfx 4890 1gb gfx 650w corsair psu. On max settings im getting a max of 30 fps dipping to 14 quite often. Where am I going wrong? Been thinking of getting a new monitor as I have a old NEQview AL151 15inch monitor vga monitor max resolution 1024 768 and the 4890 is designed for DVI.

How much RAM are you running?

Also, have you tried playing any other games with this setup? If so, how do they perform?

Stay cool Dean, you may be overdoing the AA, try setting to 4xAA with a wide tent filter. Check that the PCIE slot is set for 16x in the bios and that the card is seated properly. I have seen these cards work if they are not quite pushed home but you wont get the 16x slot it'll only be 4x. I presume you have installed the latest drivers for the card downloaded from the ati website? The RW graphic engine is a few years old and may not be able to take full advantage of your very up to date card. If you post again give a bit more detail with regards the hardware and OS.

That setup should fly, sorry, drive RW like an eagle (I have a similar one, it runs RW smooth like a silk). I hope you did install all the new drivers, especially graphic card are the most important.

I have windows XP service pack 3 installed have 500gb hard drive with about 30gb used. How do I change the PCIE slot is set for 16x in the bios.and how do I check the card is seated properly? I do have the latest drivers installed. My last card was a nvidia 9800 and was having 40-90fps. Really dont know what to do :bad-words:

Open CCC and look at the hardware screen see if it says PCIE x16 next to it and you can forget the bios if it does. Open the comp and press the back of the card down into the slot to ensure it's seated properly. There should be catch on the back of the slot if it's engaged your all good.

As a matter of interest how did you get rid of the nvidia graphics drivers from the system ? Did you use any type of driver cleaner application ?

No i was told by the pc repair guy that it would just overwrite previous settings. I did uninstall the nvida ones though.

Hi Dean, I am not really a nvidia man but if I have to install new ati drivers I have to use a utility called driver cleaner to get rid of all traces of the old drivers. See if theres a an uninstall tool on the nvidia website. Other than that tyry turning all settings down and see what the max FPS is you can get throwing all quality to the wind. Then fine tune and see where you end up.

First of all, I'd like to tell you that I've been there, it took me a while to set up a well-balnced system for RS/RW, and the process involved some serious headaches, too.

As regards framerates, 40-90 is quite a wide spectrum, the only valid comparison should be under the exact same cricumstances, for example, pick up a complex scenario at Paddington, for example, (one of Richard's AP1 packs or any other that you know really pushes the cpu to the limit). I must tell you RS/RW isn't that dependant on GPU, but CPU power. It took me a while to realize that, I changed the graphic card to a nvidia 9800 gtx+ but I didn't see a dramatic increease in FPS until I changed the mobo and CPU (a nice Intel C2 Quad 6700 beast).

They way you uninstall drivers seems right to me, I uninstall and tell the application to delete the previous one, reboot, and then install the updated drivers.

PS: I've recently installed an additional HDD only for games, (a 10000rpm Velociraptor), which I keep defragmented and have gotten rid of dreaded stutter almost completely.
