Re: Electrification of the GWML
Coal is definitley king imported or not. You need alot of gas to supply the UK eletrified railways.
a Coal fired PS requires Oil to keep the burners going. And in the days gone by there used to be coal fired Gas Production refineries.
so in theory you need Coal for Gas and Oil for Coal.
All in All Dodcots got a very big problem ahead of it if its to supply the GWML with electricity.

Why don't we build the Severn estuary tidal power schemes and use the energy from that?

Re: Electrification of the GWML
Too expensive and the further the electricty flows the weeker the Power if you were to electrify all the way to Penzance i would suggest Wind Farms to be owned by NR purely for electrival supply to the railway.
Re: Electrification of the GWML
A Severn Barrage would produce 8% of the Uk's electricity requirement without any pollution, excluding the pollution produced during construction (due to lorries bringing construction materials to the site etc.), and create a link between England and Wales. This would mean traffic going from the West Country to Wales wouldn't have to go all the way round via the Severn Bridge. A railway could be laid along the barrage too.

But we don't know how many people lived of the electricity provided by the top three power firms (firms not stations). So if the top three firms provided all the electricity for say 150million people then they'd be well below par of what we use per head in the UK. So yes the headline does make you say the above two word comment but if you looked at the figures it may not be so bad. But still, Jesus Christ…

Thats the thing. China is a big polluter, but they also have a big population. In terms of pollution per person, I'm sure America is still firmly in the lead.

I would have thought that India had the highest pullution per person.

With China and the US, why does Europe bother with all this recycling and energy saving? Sometimes I feel that our continent deserves a separate planet because we're so much better at looking after it. To be fair, there are probably many environmentally conscious people in these countries, but their governments and corporations just don't care enough.oldrocker wrote:Why on Earth are we bothering?

Re: Electrification of the GWML
But they still emit less CO2 per person than us. So surely it is us who are in the wrong. We commute 100's of miles a week to work, fly thousands of miles a number of times a year to take a holiday and use air conditioning as soon as it reaches 25oc. It's us who buys things cheap from China and then throw it away all too easily, its us who need to have fruit and veg year round no matter how far its been flown. It’s us who think that lamb from New Zealand is a good thing, what’s wrong with our own? Yes China could do more but it is us who create more CO2 and it is us with our disposable income buying things that we don't really need.
I am of course a huge hypocrite as I too buy things on the cheap and throw them away, I love foreign food and drink (beer in particular) and I've flown 9 times in the last year. So I don't exactly pray what I preach
