Black screen of death

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Black screen of death

Post by smarty2 »

Over the past 10 or so hours Railsimulator just stops intermitently and the screen goes black? it has got to the point where it now no longer operates even when double clicking the .exe? If something is wrong in the first instance why does it not fail at that point when a problem arises from an install or such rather than going belly up over time???? I am going to see if RS Tools pro can enlighten me. Just one other question my fellow simmers what Anti virus do you have running with an RS setup by where you are not experiencing problems and RS runs sweet as a nut!

Hi,
I have been using Eset Nod32 for over 12 months now and never a problem with it working at all times, even when off line.

Hi Mart, not heard of this problem before. Is it only happening with RS? Sounds like graphics to me. Just check to see that your card is running ok.

I'm running Norton 09.

Hi, all my other apps and games are working fine it's only RS! I have panda and i think it is deleting stuff from RS it doesn't like, i have blueprints missing, even nodes from the Voyager and whole rafts of sounds go too? I cant be sure though it is my anti virus but this is something that happens over time and gradually gets to the point of having to delete RS and start all over again! I hope RW is more stable?

Thanks for the replies

Instead of complete reinstalls how about just pasting a backup into your rail sim main folder - at least that way you can be assured that everything will be complete.

Hello Mart
On the subject of Anti Virus software
I use AVG and it has never interfered with my RS installation
I leave AVG switched on constantly even when I'm offline.
Kind regards Stephen

Never tried NOD, but meant to be the best, I use AVG and runs with no problem. Run a Log(mate) to find out what's going on Mart.

Hiya, i have it tells me that reams of stuff are missing, blueprints, sounds, textures, its as if summat is deleting chunks of stuff from my RS folders? That's why i was leaning towards Anti virus but i have AVG on my XP set up and that is the same as my Vista one although i am running Panda on the Vista one? I am at a loss, the only thing which cures it is a total re instal from disc, i have had to do this several times since i got the game when it came out, with this course of action sanctioned by RSDL when queried.

Thanks for your interest fella's

I've been using NOD32 for many years, never had a problem.
And Outpost firewall.
and SUPERantispyware
and Trojan hunter.
and Ad Muncher.
And MakwareBytes Anti-Malware

BTW, they all run in W7 RC x64

some members may not like this, but I use pay for Security programs because if the free ones were as good as the payfor ones,
no-one would buy the pay for ones.

HI

This does not sound like a problem with Rail Simulator although it is RS that is affected if both operating systems are have the same problem. It could be another program that you are running on both machines that is attacking RS.

I have ad aware and spybot search and destroy? But the thing is i haven't had those on all the time i have had RS? they were installed this year. i think something is doing it too, but finding what it could be is going to be pretty hard, the only option is to have an RS only hdd with no internet connection and no need for all the necessary gubbins that go with a connection?

Cheers
