Some thoughts on Berms

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Some thoughts on Berms

Post by refman »

These are some berms ( embankments ) I have been playing around with to see if I could find an easy method of adding them to my new Kingsbridge branch.
First I made a 20m length of single track fencing ( placed on both sides of the track )
Then I tested this as a gantry item to see if it worked OK.
Next I added the berm to the fencing making it about 4m longer than the fence.
The ace file for the berm has transparent end to allow the things to overlap a bit.
I set the origin point just about track height, and then added them as a gantry item.
After placing you need to pick out each piece to make it a terrain object to allow the track to show.
I am very pleased with the results.

Had this idea pop into my head a while back actually but I never got round to experimenting with it. To be honest, I'm generally quite happy with normal terrain embankments - I only really use berms for embankments where there's scenic items or roads/rivers in close proximity to the track that would otherwise be covered by the embankment. A set of gantry style cuttings to tidy up the edges of cuttings would be a lot more useful, but sadly, a lot more complex to get working.

One minor point.

The embankments were railway property so the fence would be at the bottom of them.

You would only find a fence at the top for safety purposes.

Real world embankments have much shallower gradients (usually about 30 degrees, I believe) - yours would rapidly flow down to form a large muddy puddle at ground level once they had absorbed a little rainfall, leaving the track suspended in mid air.

Thanks for the comments guys. So now I`v lost the fencing and made the sides a little less steep.
I also based the first occupation underbridge on my berm master, and it all fitted together quite well.

Yes that certainly looks good. Are you thinking of sticking it in the download library at some point?

Could do with something like that on my route :)

Now uploaded ( UKTS FILE ID 21365 ) awaiting approval.
Only the single track version at the moment, but it should be possible to increase the width ( X axis ) with SFM.
The texture file is very simple and can be changed to suit any route quite easily .
I think you could change textures and have a number of berms to cover various areas.
It is also possible to produce a berm that would blend with two others.
Let me know what you think guys.

Downloaded the berms and got them installed. What a hugely useful addition to the route builder’s tool kit! Any chance of some double and quadruple track versions refman?
