Naming folders for organization

Post by tubemad »

Hi all,

Just a quick post whilst I'm on here..
..Does anyone think maybe a lot of the folders could be named under either numbers or classes?

As much as I don't mind what people call it, it becomes something else when digging up the eng file in TrainStore, I have so many folders and yet when it comes to looking for..say..a class 142, toy look in class...142..or arriva and can't find the folder, then I'll re-download and unzip the folder to desktop and see the reason I couldn't find it is because there's a JD or CW before it, or its named something totally off ball.

I like Antons folders has they all begin with class then the class number, easy to find, and MT is OK if you know it is an MT product.

I would re-name the folders so I can find everything but would this mean for an activity, everyone else would need to do the same? :?

What does everyone else think (and if anyone has any tips for finding stock much faster in trainstore, I would appreciate it :))

Cheers,

James.

Indeed. If you rename folders then no one else would be able to run your activity unless they replicate your folder structure. It would have been great if everything had been more structured from day 1 but now I fear its too late.

I probably have loads of versions of the same loco since Ive got many of the CD's. On each most of the stock comes with its own naming structure. It makes the trainset folder a bit bloated but i can live with that.

You could still do it for your own use.

You can avoid folder naming problems by using Activity Analysis to check activities you are installing. The program will search all your trainset folders for the needed rolling stock and then edit the activity so it will run. No need to have multiple folders with the same stock. It can be found here: http://www.eto-software.de/msts_english.htm

Just a reminder that I am in the process of totally reorganising my modern stock into files and folders based on the TOPS classification plus creating my own common folders for sound and cab - many a simmer has been bored by my posts, well those who read them!

Diesel stock nearly complete although the ENG and WAG files still need some attention viz-a-viz SMS and CVF data. All common files have been checked and amended using RouteRiter.

Still developing the reorganisation of carriages and wagons and I have discovered as advised by Ian Macmillan and others that it is a mess of potage - I believe that is the correct interpretation of that old adage. Oh well back to the research, etc.

Further updates to come!

Ruf

PS1 Have now downloaded the MT Class 11 Pack, and therefore now only missing virtual models of TOPS Classes 5, 10 and 12 for diesel locomotives!

PS2 I accept that any activities that I create will be somewhat limited - well alright then limited to me only!

Well actually to keep the names as they are I have not long thought maybe each train I download I'll add it to an excel spreadsheet, add the first line in a certain style like SWT_455 SWT_444 FGW_158 ect, then by it its actual folder name, so I can ctrl + F to look for the stock from a certain TOC and see what the folder name is and drag it off TS

In my case items are labelled as follows:

TRAINSET Label = Class_455_EMU_SWT
CONSIST Label = Class_455_SWT - consist labelling in abeyance
COMMON.CAB Label = Class_455_CabView
CVF File label = Class455CabView
COMMON.SOUND label = Class_455_Sound
SMS File Label = Class455Eng, Class455Cab, etc
