The thing is they all have faults - some of which are more serious from a maintenance point of view thatn passenger comfort. The Desiro family and the Networkers for instance are nice to sit in but the Desiros use Continental style bogies that batter the track and the 465/0's and 465/1's have an unreliable traction package and IFE doors.

Come to think of it - the 456's are probably the best :)

Regards,

Dan

As far as I'm concerned it's the 430 (later 432). Also known as 4REP.

If we're limited to what's running out there now, 442s are the nicest to travel on that I have experienced. 458s are pretty nice to travel in, too.

I would have said Slam door stock (411, 421 and 423) and 365 Networkers (they were 3rd Rail as well once :)), but from the List i would say the networkers

Got to be a 442 for me. Lovely comfy seats, nice suspension and the motors made a lovely racket at speed!

You are not limited to anything, you can even say the southern railway EMU's!!!!Just as long as it is third rail...Personally I think I like the 465's as I went on them almost every weekend when I was in U.K. , But If I would get rid of one EMU it would be the desiro's,I dislike them abut 95%,But I would like the 442's back,or did they come back???

Bruce :)

I quite like the 375/ 377's on South Eastern and Southern myself. 444's are quite spacious and comfortable, but their first class section is rubbish compared to a 159.

YES!! So why did SWT decide that the 458s (which at the time broke down a lot) would be better to keep, and that the 444s were are worthy replacement??

442s were cleared for diversions between Byfleet and Claphap via Richmond and Hounslow. Can't see what use they'd be on the Windsor services...

They were getting quite unreliable before SWT got rid, and there was deemed to be a requirement to run 12x450 to Portsmouth (to increase the number of "seats" on the route). This, coupled with reviving the 458s, freed up some 444s for the Bournemouth line, and allowed them to get rid of the 442s. There's a political thing there too, with what were comparatively new trains sitting in sidings (I think the 458s were only about 4 years old at the time), and I don't imagine the DfT were keen on that. Of course, having the 442s in sidings was embarrassing too, but they're over 20 years old now, and the mechanical bits are more like 40 years old...

I really wouldnt mind if the seats in the 444s and 450s were actually soft and comfortable, as opposed to rock-hard seats. Thats another reason to enjoy being at uni away from the southern region   At least the old DMUs have nice seats in them :D
