Uncoupling / Recoupling

Post by jevon »

I've made some progress and actually managed to create a new consist in the Ox-Pad Free Roam scenario. :) I used the JustTrains Class 66 engines and the IWB Cargowaggons. BTW, they're super. And the explanation that came with them about how to place new assets into scenarios was the clearest I've come across. Bing, bang, done!

Anyway, I placed a coupled-set of Class 66 engines and two groups of 15 freight cars at Reading. I saved the scenario, quit RailSim, reopened the sim and ran the scenario. Everything worked fine. I coupled the engines to the first batch of waggons and then coupled this consist to the other batch of waggons and headed for Maidenhead. At Maidenhead I backed the entire consist into the parking area, uncoupled the engines, then took the engines alone down the line. After 10 minutes I decided to return to Maidenhead to pick up the cars I had dropped off.

When I tried to re-couple the engines to the parked batch of freight cars it simply wouldn't work. I have "Auto-couple" enabled in the preferences and tried a number of times at about 1 mph, but no go. I also tried Shift-Ctrl-C and that wouldn't work either. In the coupling pane of the Driver's Assistant, the batch of freight cars doesn't even appear. And, yes, the coupling mechanisms are the same (not US style). So, I'm at a loss about why I couldn't recouple to this batch of freight cars that I had no trouble connecting to when the scenario began at Reading station.

Any thoughts?

Thanks a lot.

Hi

Did you place a "pick up consist" for this problem stock when you did the editing?
When coupling up always do it slowly, less than 1 mph and look closely at the buffers as they close, just a gentle kiss of the buffer faces is all that is required.( Ctrl + Shift + C )

Mike, thanks for your reply.

Affirmative on the coupling technique -- that's exactly what I did -- 1 mph or less.

I'm still learning the RS terminology, and after reading your reply I searched on "pick up consist." I found this thread

http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 21&t=87934

which describes a similar problem involving the HTA Coal Hopper. I have 3 of these in my combined rake, and the thread suggests there there is some kind of coupling bug with these particular rolling stock items. Apparently the issue was supposed to be fixed in the MK2 update but wasn't. The confusing bit is that I am initially able to couple to the rake, but after uncoupling, I can't re-couple.

I'll try some other things with the rake in question to see if I can more precisely define the problem.

Thanks again.

Jev,

Have you installed the Rolling Stock Physics updates from here: http://www.railsimulator.com/en/freedownloads_fixes? They mainly address coupling problems but whether or not that particular issue with the HTAs is fixed I don't know.

Andy, thanks for suggesting that it might be a physics issue. I installed the 4 physics updaters that I believe were released after the MK2 update:

Class 08 Physics Update: http://www.railsimdownloads.com/files/c ... hysics.rar
Cajon Pass Route Rolling Stock Physics Update: http://www.railsimdownloads.com/files/c ... hysics.zip
NY Route Rolling Stock Physics Update V2: http://www.railsimdownloads.com/files/c ... hysics.zip
Core Rolling Stock Physics Update V2: http://www.railsimdownloads.com/files/c ... hysics.zip

I'm not sure which, but one of these seems to have fixed the problem. I followed pretty much the same steps I had previously in the Ox-Pad Free Roam Scenario, and I was able to couple, uncouple and re-couple pretty much anything.

I hope all of these little fixes get rolled into the MK3 update. It sure will make it easier for noobs like me :D
