I now have 216 classes of locomotive and multiple units listed under TOPS together with a further 9 multiple units not listed under TOPS.
For the above I have been able to create 220 class specific common cab folders and 217 class specific common sound folders from those available in the proprietary and freeware domains. Obviously this has called for a good degree of compromise, based on the recommendations of the virtual model’s creator together with written and visual research. If and when suitable alternatives become available I will be able to amend the relevant folder accordingly – they will always use the same nomenclature for the CVF and SMS files.
I now have the following TOPS classes still requiring Cab Views: Class 252(Prototype HST), Class 307, Class 370(APT), Class 502 and Class 503.
I also have the following TOPS classes still requiring Sounds: Class 252(Prototype HST), Class 306, Class 307, Class 370(APT), Class 501, Class 502, Class 503 and Class 506.
It is worth noting that I have yet to identify virtual models for the following TOPS classes:
Small Shunters = Classes 5, 10, 11 and 12
First Generation DMUs = Classes 103, 109, 112, 113, 116, 118, 122, 125, 127, 128, 130 and 131
DEMUs = Classes 202 and 203 - shorter versions of Class 201?
DEMUs = Classes 204 and 206 – but these could be cobbled together using items from 205+EPB and 201+EPB respectively?
Class 252 (APT)
Class 307
Class 316 = prototype unit that could be cobbled together using 457 less TSO plus PTSO from 313 unit?
Class 410 = un-refurbished 4BEP – what difference from 412(4BEP) units?
Class 420 = 4BIG that could be cobbled together using 4CIG less TSO plus a buffet unit?
Class 422 = 8DIG but could be cobbled together using 4CIG and 4BIG units?
Class 427 = 4VEG
Class 430 = 4REP - what difference from 432(4REP) unit?
Class 431 = 6REP – unknown combination of items from 432(4REP) and 438(4TC) when the motors from 4REPs were being used in the creation of Class 442 (5WES) units?
Class 492 = 3TC - but could be created from 438(4TC) units less TFK?
Classes 501 to 504
Metro Camel Lightweight DMU
All suggestions, comments and even rude remarks are welcome especially if I can be pointed in potentially useful directions.
Ruf
PS I will soon be starting the long and slow process of relating the above folders to the relevant ENGINE and WAGON files within the TRAINSET area of the TRAINS folder of MSTS – in parallel with my actual working MSTS.
PPS I have installed Dorset Coast V3 for driving pleasure, and MT Springfield for driving tests, etc. Note my latest comments in the CD Quality thread of the Site Administration area of the forums!

Hi Ruf
Well if you haven't got a 252 class HST........ at least you don't need the cabview or sounds.
Also goes for 501/ 502 / 503
There's a APT cab in the library
Think the 506 is still in the library.
Cheers

Re: An update on my common cab and sound folders . .
That's not the point as I want to include as much as possible. Presumably I could use Class 43 Sounds and CabView for the Class 252? The Class 506 in the library uses Acela sounds, and I'm not sure how realistic they are - perhaps I could use the typical SR EMU sounds? Yes the class 370(APT) is in the library but uses the Acela sounds and cabview, and again not sure how near they are? Similarly I could use the SR EMU sounds for the 501?jbilton wrote:Hi Ruf

I accept that these are not in the library or elsewhere, but you never know . . . .
Anyway I have more than enough to keep me going with development of a standardised Trainset system, etc.
Thanks for the suggestions, Ruf
PS Will think about the LMS/BR classes 502 and 503!

Maybe sometime in the next decade - assuming I am still sane!! I've always been a diesel man so to speak, although my upbringing is SR electric. Born in Isleworth, Middlesex and lived there or Hounslow. I vaguely remember a steam shunter around the Hounslow area.mendes wrote:Blimey!!!!!

When i moved to Newcastle I was seduced by the Class 55s. Here in Milnrow I have to make do with Class 142s and Class 150s with the occasional Class 1565s - well at least until October when buses take over whilst the Metro is extended to Rochdale some 3 years later.
As I said its stock standardisation, etc. in the immediate future together with the appropriate consists. This will hopefully help me to understand engine and wagon files.
Oh well time to close down before watching the Toon on the telly!

Re: An update on my common cab and sound folders . .
Good grief
That is a huge effort you have made. I wish I had the patience to do that. I spent a complete weekend sometime back sorting out the common sound and cab for all my Class 37s. Not sure how many I have but they are all aliased now to the common cab and sounds.
You must have far too much time on your hands to be doing this but well done anyway.

Re: An update on my common cab and sound folders . .
Following the initial post I have now completed the outstanding CabView and Sound files for my COMMON.CAB and COMMON.SOUND folders, and I now have only to complete the checks for typos – shouldn’t be too many having extensively used ConText - and missing files.
Class 252(Prototype HST) – used Class 43 Cab View
Class 307 – used 2BIL Cab View
Class 370(APT) – used Class 91/DVT Cab View
Class 502 and Class 503 – used 2BIL Cab View
Class 252(Prototype HST) – used Class 43 Sounds
Class 306 – used MTMW-EMU Sounds
Class 307 – used MTMW-EMU Sounds
Class 370(APT) – used Class 91/DVT Sounds
Class 501 – used SR-EMU Sounds
Class 502 and Class 503 – used SR-EMU Sounds
Class 506 – used MTMW-EMU Sounds
I would reiterate that each folder is complete in itself with ALL necessary files, including those from the SOUND folder within MSTS, e.g. uncouple_auto1.wav and x_uncouple_auto1.wav, etc.
I should point out that Steam stock will not be considered for some time yet – dearth of knowledge as much as anything else. Still plenty of time when I retire!
My next task is to create my own TRAINSET folder within the TRAINS folder of MSTS set up in one of my external HDs. This will be done in parallel with my actual working MSTS – still want to drive trains on Dorset Coast V3. (Must update DC sooner rather than later!) This will follow a similar format to the CabView and Sound folder descriptions, and once this is started I will need to insert/replace the relevant CVF and SMS files, checking for any anomalies and/or errors. Believe it or not I do get pleasure out of this – it’s the logical engineer in me I suppose.
I should point out that this probably gives the impression that my life is all neatly ordered and tidy, but my wife would soon put you right there as it’s anything but!

PS Thanks for the additional advice Jon - as usual can't see the wood for the trees! Wrote the above earlier before inserting into reply.

I realised today that some of the night cabviews have not been correctly labelled, so that will set me back a little.
