Forest Of Dean Route.

I thought I would let you know how my route is coming along. ( Very, very slowly!! ) I started this route in 2003 and originally intended to just do a short route covering the Forest Of Dean, But when I had finished it and tried running trains on it, I realised that it needed a Main Line, to realistically run larger engines, like GWR Castles etc. So I added on the GWR Main Line from Chepstow to Gloucester Central.
Then I decided, as I had The Severn and Wye Railway going across the River Severn to Berkeley Road, I added the Midland Main Line, Gloucester Eastgate down to the Stoke Gifford Triangle. So I then had to add the link in under The Severn Tunnel to Severn Tunnel Junction and back up to Chepstow.
The layouts are the actual layouts as they were in a period between 1900 and 1960's, so that I could include all of the old coal and iron mines.
All of the trackwork is finished and I have been adding scenery, ready made items from UKTrainSim, but recently Reg Furniss has kindly offered to make some buildings and structures specially for my route. Although due to the large area covered by this route, some area's will only be sparsley populated. Then I can add the signalling, which will be a mixture of GWR and Midland signals.

Up to press David, you have done wonder's with it, considering it just started out with the Forest Of Dean. With all these additions it looks like it will be a route well worthy of becoming another area route, such As Cannock Chase, Burton Derby etc, with plenty of options for some good activities. Another plus is, that it covers the Steam Era too.
Good luck with the rest of it and do keep us posted with some screen shots, when you get the chance.

Who said MSTS is on its way out?

Hi Jon,
Many thanks for the interest in my Forest Of Dean Route. I'm afraid that progress is still slow, as summer has meant DIY and gardening jobs. The evenings have been spent trying the wonderful Thames - Mersey route and the various activities that are available, also trying to pick up some tips from it.

Reg had made me an excellent replica of the Severn Railway Bridge for the route, for which I am extremely grateful.

I have come up with a bit of a dilemma, in that I really wanted to keep the track layouts as close as possible to the originals, but I am hitting the problem of number of objects allowed on a tile, especially in the Lydney Junction area and I especially wanted that area to be as it was, that's where my interest in trains first started. I am of course also coming across that problem in some other areas as well. Other than that it has still been adding tree's, houses, farms and scenery. Can't wait to be able to start adding the signals into their correct places, then I expect I will have even more MSTS woes to get through!!

I am wondering whether to ask for some help with this route, especially from someone that has had experience with the larger routes?

I don't know whether it will be a CD or download, I presume that is up to the moderators of UKTS? But I am a while away from that yet, if I am going to release it in a finished condition. ( If there is such a thing ).

Gloucester Central and Gloucester Eastgate are just the track layouts at the moment and unfortunately I have put the track layouts in, as they were in the steam days, which is what I wanted to do. But after some good advice from Don Hinton ( of Cannock Chase and the Burton & Derby Route fame ) for which I am extremely grateful. I am going to have to trim quite a lot of sidings on that tile, out of the route. As the same tile covers all of Gloucester, it is currently at 1208 objects, which is just track, 25 KB size. So to be able to add scenery, signals etc, I need to do some trimming and/or using more multiple trackwork.
So that it will fit within the MSTS restrictions.

I am currently trimming sidings etc in the Lydney area tile, where I have the same problem, except worse, 1466 objects and 795 KB size.

Gloucester will have to be made up with ready made items that are available on UKTS, as I am unable to make my own buildings, but I have my memory and old photo's, to try and pick close objects.

Its up to your good self, actually. But bear in mind that a CD usually contains stock and activities....so you'll need to sort more out for the content of a CD compared with a download.

I for one would love to see this route on CD. I get put off downloading routes as its so much hassle having to download everything and Im not good at that kind of stuff.
