Great little trains of Wales.

Nothing like thinking ahead. We booked 2 weeks in August 2009 at http://www.wales-holidays.co.uk/propert ... 65&x=0&y=0 Read the description carefully The Ffestiniog railway passes along the top of the garden and it’s just a short walk to the station. Better yet look at the photo taken from the other half of the semi-detached pair of cottages



Now I have looked at the Great Little Trains of Wales site http://www.greatlittletrainsofwales.co.uk/discount.html and see they offer a discount card that gives a discount of 20%. What I can't establish from the website is whether that applies to "family tickets" which we usually end up buying since they are cheaper (just) than 2 adults and a child. If it doesn't apply to family tickets then would all 3 of us need a card at £10 each that would wipe out any potential savings ?

Has anyone used this scheme or know of a better way of saving money for visiting multiple railways ? We intend to hit at least 5 or 6 of them from our base at Penrhyndeudraeth.

Well i live in rhyl and there are leaflets about the narrow gauge trains and the operating times and fares. I could find out for you if you want?

I have lived here for 5 years and love the place, so much more relaxed, cleaner air and the people, like you say are friendly. Some people knock Rhyl but it's now where near as bad as people make out and its certainly a lot safer than some places ive been to.

It's a shame you didn't go to Wales last august John as I did a week buffet Stewarding on the FR!! Unfortunately I won't be there this year as I'll be working on big railways (hopefully )

All the fares and train times are online. Last year, just before the show in Llandudno, Lad491 and RobertM jined me on a whizz round a few of the little railways. And a brill time was had!!

If the UKTSLive show gets invited back this year, I'm going to do a similar thing again.....and this time I might be lucky enough to be allowed to get out the train up Snowdon!!!

You can get a HRA Inter Rail pass gets you free entry to 80 railways and railway museums don't know which ones at the moment costs just £50 a year and you can go free to a railway as many times as you want so saving loads of money but you can't go on special events you pay reduced fare on those days but if the railways in wales accept the pass then thats a great saving especially if you visit some other railways around the country during the year.

MY HRA interail pass (albeit a cheaper 'working members' one) was well worth having last time I went to North Wales- Ffestiniog day rover was 5.85, WHR the same price and I believe its valid on more lines round there. I can also take a guest on my pass at the same rate.

It may well be the most viable way of doing the full WHR next year- an experience I'm very excited about!

From what I've heard you'll be able to get from Caernarfon-Blaenau (or vice versa) but not all the way back because the connecting trains don't allow you to.
