Hellifield Station Entrance sign

Back in 2007 I was intrigued to find a sign at Hellifield with "British Rail" on it, so I took a photo:

Sadly when I paid a visit to Hellifield earlier this year the sign had gone and in its place was a new one with Northern branding on it:

I was ashamed to say the least, I'm wondering what others think.

I personal don't think with privatisation it should be changed, nor do I feel it's right to move on and forget history.

But then again, it was inevitable wasn't it...

I have no problem with it. British Rail dont operate services anymore.... why does it make sense to keep the sign if you were one of the privitasation companys?

I find it sad to see British Rail branded signs removed, as it is a reminder of the past. It annoys me when the TOC branded ones are put up as they will be just taken down years later when the franchise ends for the TOC operating that station. A complete waist of money and time!

Those signs are brilliant and I like the first one.

I feel the same way when the old Northern Ireland Railways signs are taken down and replaced with the current Translink NIRailways ones.





I'm gutted that I didn't step up and ask to take home one of the old signs at my local NIR station as they were taking them down. They already done it before I had a chance. I miss the old NIR logo.

It's the sentimental value of sign, and the history behind it.

I doubt your everyday punter really is going to care.

You change your PC when it can't do what you want it to do.

Would you really buy a new PC just because you didn't like the colour scheme?

Nonsense, I would keep my old computer because it was still usable, if it was broken then it wouldn't be worth keeping, similarly to that sign.

This is fair point, but there is the point to the public of "if it aint modern/up to date, we dont like it".

Its misleading to - imagine someone trying to contact british rail for some help instead of northern.

saying that we are all a bit silly arguing over a trivial matter that none of us will ever probably have any input into.

It's sad to see it go, but it has to. Times change, and you have to advertise your own corporate identity just as BR did. You don't see an ASDA superstore with Tesco signage all over it do you

I strongly agree with this, although perhaps "You don't see a Morrisons store still with Safeway signage all over it do you" would be a better comment.

I might start bellowing and flailing at signs!
