Route Creation
Hello everyone,
first of all, I'm a first time poster here. I'm in need of assistance in creating a route. I've found this forum to be of much more help than the RS official forum.
Let me say this first. I have thoroughly searched these forums for info on how to create a route. I also have followed all the tutorials I came upon. I have installed Mike Simpson RS tools and followed the instructions to the letter. I also spent 3 to 4 hours trying to find information on the problem I'm having.
All this for nothing... I create the template which I see in the Asset Creator. When I launch RS to create the route, it's not there! Nowhere to be found! No template! I have also placed the HGT file where it belong.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks, Chris

Re: Route Creation
hi, welcome to the forums, did you export after creating your route template, button at the top of screen, for the height file you need to create a folder in your rail simulator folder and call it DEM, inside that folder create another folder and call that SRTM and place you hgt file in there, so (drive/program files/rail simulator/DEM/SRTM/
hope this helps

Hi Gav, I should have mention it, but yes I exported it. I get the message in the lower window that the operation was succesful.
Here is what I get:

Re: Route Creation
Hi Chris,
You are missing a folder in your source folder structure.
It should read
C:\Program Files\Rail Simulator\Source\ChMah69\Hull-Gatineau\TemplateRoutes\Hull-Gatineau.xml
It is recommended to build up a folder structure as in the developer/addon example.
Regards
Gerrit

Re: Route Creation
hi, where do you expect to find your template? it will not be selectable as a route, if you select new route, bottom right of screen, then your template should be available there. the template does not create the route, just the rules the route will use, if the problem is more technical than this then im stuck mate
cheers
Gav

Hi Gerrit and thanks, this fixed it! I guess I never saw anywhere that I needed to add the "TemplateRoutes" folder.HondaWizard wrote:Hi Chris,

As for the template, I know I will not find it as a route since I haven't created one with it yet!GavNormandale wrote:hi, where do you expect to find your template? it will not be selectable as a route, if you select new route, bottom right of screen, then your template should be available there. the template does not create the route, just the rules the route will use, if the problem is more technical than this then im stuck mate

Re: Route Creation
Ok, I managed to get the maps but now, I can't get the terrain to pop up!
The "t" is not working but my HGT files might be corrupted or wrong so I'll check them out later on.
Cheers

Re: Route Creation
You need to be in building or track laying mode rather than terrain mode for the "t" key to work, at least that's what I've found.
Also when working in the RS editor the "t" key on your keyboard really needs a collar on it to prevent accidentally hitting it. Not too bad if all you've laid is a bit of track but doofus here buried half his town under a landslip!

Re: Route Creation
Ok, I've made another step forward today. I had the blue sky bug but sorted it out but I'm still unable to generate the terrain. More to it is that I'm unable to download anything from the USGS site to get my DEM!
Oh well... I'll keep trying!

Re: Route Creation
Finally managed to use the "t" key. I had the wrong tiles for the region I want to model. I downloaded the HGT files from the Nasa site but I'm still looking to dowload the files from the USGS site. If anyone has some info on how to do that, if you could share, it would be appreciated. In the meantime, I'll try to find out.
By the way, here is the info on my location. Lat= 45.48840 - Long= -75.65160
I have downloaded the following hgt files: N44W074, N44W075, N44W076, N45W074, N45W075, N45W076. This is where I live and we have a small RR operating here and I'd like to model some of it.
Thanks again for all your help,
Chris

Re: Route Creation
Hello again guys,
I should have labelled this thread "Official help to Johnybgood18"!!! lol
The terrain is fine, had the wrong HGT files. I'm at creating decals now. I'm using PSP 8 and it won't save properly to ACE format (some problems with the plig-ins) so I just save to JPG. Using ToAce, I transfer my JPG to ACE and save it in the proper directory. When I open the Asset Editor and I go to the file, I right-click on it and I get no such option to create a blueprint out of it. The only time I get this option is by right-clicking on the Decals folder! I have tried to right-click on the other ACE files in there and still the same problems.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks all

Re: Route Creation
hi, i dont know about your problem with your blueprint but a JPG file is no good, if you read this post thoroughly you will see the need for an alpha channel
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 30#p924388
i suggest you find the plug in for a DDS file save, think its on the nvidia site, create alpha channel, save as DDS, then use toace, without the alpha channel i believe the decal can become distorted,
cheers
Gav

Re: Route Creation
Hi, it's me again...
I have installed the DDS plugin in PSP and when I try to save the image as a DDS files, I get a message saying that the alpha channels will not be saved because of the limitation of the file format!?!?!?! I even tried it on the PS and I get the same message. I also end up with a DDS file with 0 byte in it!
Anyone has a clue?

Re: Route Creation
Hello again,
after some fruitless effort with PSP and PS, I downloaded Gimp, complete with DDS plugin. After installing Gimp and converting a Google Earth JPG into DDS with good result, I was left with one obstacle... creating a border in an alpha channel. Anyone know how to make one?
Thanks,
Chris
