Yet another intractible pathing problem

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Portals do not function correctly.

They are too hit and miss and lack any of the flexibility or features of the Trainz Portals
Can you elaborate on any problems that you have been able to isolate by testing as portal-specific? I'd like to get a definitive answer on whether portals have been fixed for my list of critical issues.

Points in other posts well understood :D

So ask yourself.....Is this a Sim or A Game!!!!!!!

If its only a game then fine, But if its a sim well you all know what sim stands for i guess :-?
For those that dont understand the difference please read below :P

simulation (n.) (computer science) the technique of representing the real world by a computer program : "a simulation should imitate the internal processes and not merely the results of the thing being simulated"
simulation (n.) the act of imitating the behavior of some situation or some process by means of something suitably analogous (especially for the purpose of study or personnel training)
simulation (n.) representation of something (sometimes on a smaller scale)

Peter, I don't understand your point. Simulation and game are not mutually exclusive. There is a whole genre of simulation games. Rail Simulator, as the second word of the title denotes, belongs to that genre.

The purpose of this simulation game is entertainment. Because of the flaws, it fails to entertain. For that reason, it is a failure. There is no basis for a claim that, simply because its purpose is to entertain that no amount of crippling flaws matter.

Maybe you ought to specify that " For me" this game ........ failure

How about the many people that are content ? for them it is not a failure, therefore the Game / Sim can be considered a success.

James your posts often read as a definative statement... you certainly don't speak for me.

Both James and Sly have valid points here. I for one have gained great pleasure from building my Route which is now in the testing stage. But I am not enjoying the testing quite as much. The Route Editor is a terrific and very powerful tool but the Scenario Editor IMHO is a nightmare. My concern is that I can create a complex Route which has loads of interactive features and looks great (IMO) but will I be able to produce Scenarios that are both realistic and complex enough so myself and others who may download the Route will enjoy the whole experience. I have serious concerns about the points that James raises some of which I have encountered already and I am working with very simple Scenarios.

James I am trying to agree with you it fails on both counts, Untill such problems with Signalling and pathing are fixed it is only a simple game.

With MTS1 if you check the scenario section you will see a great many scenarios written by me for that sim, people thought then that running round with the train loco would not work, but after a few attempts with some trickery by myself and others it was possible to fool the sim and very many excellent scenarios were made not only by me but many others.

Watching trains was another succesful scenario, with many hours of AI trains passing where you sat on the platform.
Shunting in sidings as you passed by or through a station, all these were at the time brilliant, but how can we attempt these sort of things with the problems encounted with RailSimulator?

At this present stage of Rail Simulator it is next to impossible to write anything good that will work, with out many many man hours of frustration, only to find pathing issues etc messing up all the hard work.

I have yet to see a car owners manual that told you you had to press the clutch first ... low and behold second gear :D

With cars, one has driving tests. How to change gear is common knowledge for all those with driving licences. How does one do the equivalent in Rail Simulator? Specifically, how does one have a full diagram of trains going to both the Swindon and Basingstoke portals on Rail Simulator in the same scenario?

As to the suggestion that, with these flaws, Rail Simulator is "only a game": it is not even that. It is unplayable.

Specifically.... you have to find out that you have to take your foot back off the clutch after you have put it in gear ... else the engine is revving but I'm not getting anywhere.

" It is unplayable" ... yes James, for you I believe it is.... :D

Hi James,
RS has at least kept you occupied for many, many hours, not only playing but talking and posting about it too.
Granted it has not been much of a summer.

On a serious note though I'm glad you are back posting and choose to spend your time using and pushing Rail Simulator.
While we know the issues that need addressing your feedback will only help us make RS better in the future.

regards
Derek

I have now updated my list of operational defects to incorporate the issue raised on this thread and testing undertaken as a result, as well as to raise it to the top of the list, being evidently now the most serious of all the flaws.

Keep up the good work James,It's always a pleasure to read through your findings when you make them public.Your time is not wasted, your posts only confirm what I knew all along,if you ever need some work on the side,i'm sure RSDL would gladly have you as a beta tester

Nothing better than airing the dirty laundry, instead of being swept underneath the carpet, its better out in the open for all to see, although some would disagree.Your post about the car,had me in stitches, which reminds me of this video when things dont work as promised, enjoy.

I agree Daz. James always manages to hit the nail on the head and opens up interesting debates with his posts.
I also like the video. I seem to remember when 95 came out quite a number of the new Pentium CPU's where getting very hot or catching fire,
