are you using XP or Vista?

With Vista you have to make sure the whole of your trainsimulator folder is set with administtator permissions and copy the apk file to the utils directory before running it from there.

Which version of Vista?

Im running the Home Edition version and it works fine doing what i suggested above. Unpack the apk file to the Utils folder. Right click on the apk file and unblock the file ( button near the bottom ), then drag the apk file over the tsunpack file, release the mouse button and it should work ok. Works for me everytime now :)

I think the "unblock" reference is to ensuring that the security aspects of Vista allow your "user" to have full access rights to the folders where both MSTS and tsunpacxk are.

If you've not done so already, and your MSTS installation is in the default location (c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator... etc), then you need to use Windows Explorer:

1) Right click on the Train Simulator folder, and select Prorerties
2) Select the Security tab
3) Add a user "Everyone" to the list of users
4) Give this new user Full permissions

Again, if not already done, find train.exe in the Train Simulator folder, select properties and in the Compatibility tab, set the option near the bottom to Run as Administrator.

Finally, do the same for Tsunpak...and any other utilities that seem not to be behaving themselves.

The apk file will be blocked by Vista by default, even when copied into a folder which has full control and administrator rights since permissions are not inherited by default. However if you right click on the apk file and select properties, down near the bottom right hand side will be a button which says "Unblock". Click on that and then the file will open as long as the tsunpack file security settings have been set to full control, as Doug has stated above.

Further to Laurie and Dougs posts above - extract an apk file to a temporary location and right click then open with. It will ask you to select a program to open apk's with. Navigate to TSUnpack then set it as below.

You should be able to unpack any activity directly from any zip file straight into the route

You could try copying the file to the utils folder in MSTS instead of double clicking,
then drag the file into the Tsunpack icon it should then unpack the activity hope this helps.

Unfortunately John, Ive found that even with the file associated correctly the apk file still wont open from within a zip file. The only way i could get it to work was by the method i described above. Fortunately that does work every time :)

I'm sorry if this is a bit of a late reply, but I hope this might help somebody else with the same problem in future.

I'm running Vista 64 and also found the tsunpack file simply wouldn't work, even with the fix (which reported 'already fixed' when I ran it). I'd tried 'run as administrator' on both the game itself and tsunfix, but that didn't work. I right-clicked the APK file to associate it with tsunpack, but that didn't help either. I copied the APK file into the UTIL folder and tried to run it from there, still no good. I also unblocked the file (it was showing as blocked). Same old error message though.

But I have to thank THX101S because your suggestion DID work! Physically dragging the APK file on top of the tsunpack icon did the trick!

As I recall, Apply Fix then Drag and Drop used to be the recommended order of the day even before Vista reared its ugly head. However on my installation under XP, just running TSUnpack allowed me to double-click any .apk and it would immediately go into doing its thing. Vista won't let me do that, so it's back to drag-and-drop. One recommendation from Yuri's site, though, is simply to install MSTS into a folder outside the Program Files folder. The game doesn't notice - and doesn't care - and Vista doesn't 'see' it as a program needing protection, so permission changes are unnecessary.Life is soooooo much easier...
