Decidedly urban

Post by jefran »

I saw some narrow gauge shots yesterday, and as my narrow gauge route is becoming presentable, here are some shots from the town end

In the street outside a convenient hostelry, where the crews of the loco and the steam wagon seem to have gone

Two shots at the gas works, one showing an empty load of coal wagons coming off the tippler, and the other adjacent to the original coal store, still in use for the old retort house.

It's a wagon turntable, very much like an overgrown manhole cover - unfortunately, I can't make it work!

In steam days in the UK most large goods stations in urban areas would have many wagon turntables - the wagons could be shunted by horse (or human) power into every area of the building for loading and unloading.

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.
