Bishop Auckland and South Durham Under Way....

Post by pmyers »

Just an initial view of progress on my attempt to create the network of lines set around the South Durham coalfield in the 1950's. The route is very much 'based-on' the real world as I have had problems locating information.

The route is centred on the complex triangular junction at Bishop Auckland. The first view shows the station from the north. The lines diverging to the left go to Darlington and Spennymoor. Those on the right to Weardale and Crook.

The second view shows the station from the east. The lines heading straight on are the Weardale/Crook branch and those diverging to the right are to Durham.

The third view shows as overall view of the station from the west.

It's been quite difficult findong photos and track diagrams for the area. I'd be grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of a good information source.

thanks for viewing

Looks a promising start - are you extending the York-Newcastle route or is this a seperate project?

Have a look here http://www.old-maps.co.uk

If you click on the "GAZ" button and go to Durham in the counties list then Click on the Letter "B" you will find Bishop Aukland there.

The newest map is from 1939 but it should give you a fair idea of the track layout if you zoom in on the station, in the 1:10600 map which is map 7 of 8 in the list.

Hope this helps.

It's a completely new route, although at least I'll have the luxury of having a pre-built Bank Top station object! I'll try at least to recreate part of the loco works at Darlington.

Hi, looking good.
I have loads of images on this area and a couple of maps
As I was planning (Adam teasing me on not getting anything done) on doing this area.
I do intend to model Bishop Auckland station and surrounding buildings/structures and signal boxes.

check Ernies photos of Bishop station before they ruined it.

Hi,
Also I have this map and I think you will find it very useful.

http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/bishopauckland.htm

It is a very detailed map of Bishop Auckland area from 1896. For a couple of quid it is well worth it.

cheers
