Maidenhead Station

Post by ForburyLion »

Over the past month or so, work has been underway to return platform 1 of Maidenhead station on the fast line to full length, previously only a small section, possibly 3 cars long was in use.

This seems logical to me, since FGW started using it for longer trains it has taken quite some time to unload/load passengers through the open doors.

Question I have is, Why was the platform put out of service in the first place? Seemed a bit odd to actually knock the edges off the platforms to make it unaccesible... unless it was pre-central locking doors and they wanted to make sure nobody got off there.

Does anyone know the answer?

Don't know for sure, but it could well have been down to realignment of the lines through the platform for whatever reason? In that case, removing the platform edge could have been essential to keep everything in gauge.
