New Computer/Raildriver/W Vista

Post by MSTSIreland »

Hi,

I was going to get a new pc, but all new computers only come with Vista now which Raildriver wont work on.

But apparently you CANT reload W XP on a new computer that comes with W Vista as you cant get drivers for the "Vista" motherboard to support W XP.

Does anybody know if thats true?

Not as a rule. Vendors are shipping Windows Vista with new PCs as that is what they are contracted to do by Microsoft. Providing you can get the drivers for not only the motherboard but the graphics, sound, network card etc... you can load Windows XP on the PC as the license you get is backward compatible (it is in my case). Saying that, the license key you have on the license sticker will not work with XP so you have to install an OEM version if you have one.

You may not be able to get the drivers from the PC vendor but you should be able to get the drivers from the manufacturers website (such as NVidia, Intel, Creative etc...), or even the PC vendor may sell a Windows XP disk with the drivers on for an extra fee (that is what Dell do with some of their models).

How about a local, friendly computer shop and ask them to build a PC for you to your specifications and install XP?
My local shop charge £25 to put a machine together and you end up with everything you want and nothing you don't.
Oh, and you still get the standard 12 months warranty.
It's also a good idea to stick with one shop once you're satisfied with the service.
