A grand day out to York (Wednesday May 28th 2008)

Spring half-term week (25th May to 1st June 2008) saw a hive of activity at York, with the National Railway Museum hosting it's (rather corny titled) '1968 and all that' event.

But first, there was a surprise at the station. BR Bullied Pacific 'Battle of Britain' number 34067 Tangmere rolled in with a Kingfisher Tour's Scarborough Spa Express. She paused at the station for a few minutes, having been round the Harrogate-Leeds loop, before carrying on to Scarborough.

Then it was onto the museum for the 1968 event, playing host to a marvellous cast of locomotives, including the recently-restored BR Britannia Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell (visiting from the Great Central Railway), GWR Castle 7029 Clun Castle, BR Eastern Region K4 61994 The Great Marquess, LNWR Super D 0-8-0 number 49395, BR 9F number 92220 Evening Star (out in the open for the first time in a very long while) and many more besides.

The narrow gauge shuttles were worked by the Statford Barn Railway's Hunslet 0-4-2 number 4 Trangkil, while the standard gauge shuttles were in the capable buffers of Class 14 diesel shunter number D9520.

Nice pics Certainly looks like a good show. Shame I'm not able to go (A-levels and all that ), but oh well.

I must say, a Class 14 hauling a Lancashire & Yorkshire directors saloon and a Queen Mary brakevan must rank as one of the more unusual combinations in preservation!

Thanks for the kind comments MuzTrem. Indeed the stock with the class 14 was bizzare to say the least. Still, it was good to get a ride in both the Queen Mary Brakevan and the L&Y Saloon (the latter being very handy for sheltering from a downpour in the late afternoon!)

Agreed MuzTrem, it is a rather unusual formation. I believe I saw that same formation at York last year. Mind you it was idling and languishing in a siding.
