It seems there is a market for empty boxes on ebay, either that of those bidding failed to read the auction properly.

There has ALWAYS been a market for empty boxes. Especially original Hornby Dublo, Triang, Graham Farish (British not later Bachmann) as a loco or other stock item will sell easier (more expensive) if it's in an original box. More so to collectors who in the main are only looking for specific items that are mint and boxed.
Certainly the newer Dapol and Bachmann/Farish boxes are sought after as these are quite strong plastic boxes and provide a good protection for locos and stock in transit to/from exhibitions etc.

Once I saw a hornby dcc set the one with the Jinty and gronk on it selling for $38.00 u.s. Either they dident read or they typed the bid in wrong.
