Steve did some tweaks to the database engine that made a big big difference to the performance at high load - turns out it was trying to use too much memory and by simply telling it to use less it was able to complete the same task without grinding to a halt.
We're still getting the new server configured, hopefully things will make another forward step when that happens.
Glad it's working ok for you though !
Matt.

So much for those words, every time we squeeze another ounce out of the server, another pounds worth of users comes crashing down on it
C'est la vie, when the new server comes along that'll solve all the problems for a while and i'm hoping that should be done in a week or so
I'm also looking at completely rewriting the site in to another technology that should allow for vastly more efficient use of the resources than PHP allows, which will again boost things somewhat - though that's a tad further off. The rewrite will allow me to put in some other 'toys' that I've wanted for a while too.
