It's easy to move the platforms in SFM but this would have to be done on a route by route basis as some authors have already positioned the stations correctly on their routes.
Repositioning the default shapes would spoil these routes.
It's also not a good idea the change items in the default routes as other routes will use them.
Improve textures - yes. Reposition shape files - no.

It's a good point Ian, especially as lot of freeware routes use batch files to copy files over. The more realistic alternative is to do what I've done with every other re-skin; ie rename files and allow people to insert them into the routes as they would do with any other scenery item.
