Textures not available in both UK & US Versions

Post by Acorncomputer »

I have found that although the US expansion pack does make most of the US content available in UK or own routes, the US textures are not available for use in anything but the US route. In particular I would like to use the US sand textures in a UK or own route but no sand textures are available at all.

I have tried to work out how to get the full range of textures available to all routes but have come to a stop.

Am I missing a simple solution?

Hi Geoff,

By design apparently, textures are not sharable in the sim in this way. The only way to have custom textures or mix and match textures between UK and US areas is to build your own developer texture library for the route you want to create, then use that texture library exclusivley, by itself. Using more than one texture library in a route is not possible (ie, checking more than one object filter box to include other libraries will not work). That library is defined by the "texturing.bin" file in the \environment\terrain folder for the route, and is actually chosen by an entry in the route template when you initially create the route. After the route is created, you are stuck with it.

Not sure why the sim was designed this way, but it throws a monkey wrench into any common use of various textures from different providers.

We are hoping that the next update/patch changes this.

Hi Bill

Thanks for that information. That does explain why there is a sand category with nothing in it in the UK version which then becomes full of textures when running the Cajon Pass route.
Not really a major problem but I now know a little more than than I did earlier this morning.

I can still use other US content although I am not sure where I can put a cactus ...... perhaps I can build a US themed park into my route.

I believe this was debated a couple of weeks ago but there is no easy answer, you are committed to one set of terrain textures or the other as defined in the route blueprint.

I've started a little side project based on the Flam branch (but with spiral tunnels to keep the gradients easier) and must admit to giving into temptation and using some of the US scenery items.

Yes, Adam had made some mention a couple of weeks ago of possibly bundling up the texture sets for all to use, and making them available on the KRS download area on their site so all UK-exclusive and US-exclusive owners could have access to everything. At least I think that's what he meant. However, a combined texturing.bin file (this is sort of a directory for the textures) would still need to be created in order to use them, though easy enough to make. Just checked, and UK textures are 221MB and US textures are 104MB in size, that would be quite a download for many and a lot of bandwidth for RSDL to absorb. Not sure what the status of this is at the moment.
