RSDL Developer Day

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

RSDL Developer Day

Post by RSderek »

Hi everyone.

We keep trying to think of ways of better supporting the Rail Simulator community and we're considering holding a "developers workshop".
The event would be hosted by the Rail Simulator development team and would allow us to cover some of the more detailed areas of developing add-on content for RS.
We'd hope that attendees would bring along their own creations, (complete or "works in progress") and we'd also expect a guest speaker or two.

We imagine that this would be a one day event, we would however charge a small fee to cover the venue, lunch etc.

So, would you be interested? What specific areas would you like covered? Any preferred location? (perhaps combined or immediately preceding one of the rail shows?).

Over to you.

Regards.
Derek

I'd be interested in something like this. RSDL is based in London I believe? Maybe that would be a good venue.

When are you thinking of putting it on?

Wherever you hold it, the majority of people will not be able to make it. So the number one request from me would be that you tape all the talks, and where possible workshops or whatever is suitable, just shortly edit the tapes to remove parts where someone scratches his back or pops his nose and put the cuts on-line, but somewhere where one can save them on the local disk, please.

Oh, and all the slides or other presentations themselves should be uploaded somewhere, too, so people without broadband would benefit from the slides without the audio (and without the distracting scenery which inevitable is included on a video.

Maybe taping the speakers microphone only is the better option. Combine that with a screen capture move of the presentation machine, and you have no people on film, so no issues with editing, and you can upload the whole stuff, as is.

I have to ask..who is going to do all of that? or should I contact the BBC to see if they have a documentary team free to edit it all together and put it in to a snazzy 1 hour program to be shown at 9pm on BBC4.

Well, I do know of an organisation that wanted to do something similar. They contacted the local college that had some sort of media studies / technology type course where students learnt how to make sound recordings / videos etc.

The college provided the technical support and the students. The finished product not only was distributed to people who could not attend but was also a valuable contribution to the students practical coursework since it was not a contrived exercise but a real world happening.

Since then that college was absorbed into a bigger organisation so no longer exists as such but it shows what can be possible.
Kindest regards

Sounds like a great idea but a shame that you have to be an add-on developer to get invited, as I'm sure anyone here would give their right arm to attend and get all the juicy info, meet the stars etc.

I don't suppose there'll be tea and biscuits? ;)

If you tap the micro using some laptop, all you do is switch it on in the morning and later cut out the breaks using a schedule of the talks, which would require someone noting the start and end times of the talks on a piece of paper.

Starting some screen capture software in the morning should not be too much of a problem, but it needs to be tested, otherwise, the famous demo effect will kick in and you will be cursing me.

Turning the Power Point slides into PDF does not take too long.

Filming the event would require one person for the whole day. Thus, this is not my primary suggestion, it was just the first thought, which put it on top of the post. (I know bosses who hand out this task stating something like "you must be so happy to witness this event"; glad to hear that you are not one of those.) More seriously though, I would assume that more or less all the people in the RSDL team would be happy to meet the more decent and serious users face to face and exchange thoughts. The fee for the food and venue would lock out the "I want it for free yesterday" brigade, so it should be a pleasing experience for everyone who attends. Even if they look after the hardware, biscuits, additional power lines, etc. in turns.

I am not aware this is an invite only event. Any interested party is welcome to register an interest. How does one become an add-on developer in the first place if you dont know how to go about developing add-ons? :)

That’s great for you guys in the UK but unless you are envisaging a world tour it is of limited value to those of us on the other side of the planet. In fact if you are unable to disseminate the information from the developers workshop to the rest of the community then how does this ‘better support’ any RS developers who cannot attend?

As well as the proposed developer workshop may I suggest you devote more time creating clear, concise, and unambiguous documentation/tutorials and share this with the ‘world’ community of struggling RS developers.

Hi, if it does prove to be a success nothing is stopping us from going on tour!

And as adam mentioned earlier it is open to all.
