Not entirely true. They've been up to Glasgow and Kilmarnock quite a lot for work to be done on them, originally all via Dumfries, but while the Gretna - Annan work was done they were cleared via Carstairs! :D :D :D
As Spartacus said 142 units are not totally banned is Scotland as there is one heading for Glasgow now.

They are cleared for running empty to works but not for passenger use.

This is because, when introduced, they could not be relied upon to operate track circuits. Since they were not intended for Scotland it was not worth the expense of testing them and making any TC changes.

Altho things have changed since then it would be even more expensive on today's money grabbing railway.
