What to do with the CSV marker file?

Post by DriverXY »

I have the North American version of RS. I don't have the devtools so I'm trying to get a head start in route creating w/o them. To that end I've created a route with several HGT files and they show up nicely in RS. I then created a GPX file with a number of route markers following the example linked in RS Tools. Using the tool I converted the GPX file to a CSV file. Now what? How can I use it in RS keeping in mind I don't have the Dev Tools?

I figured this out but there must be an easier way. I painstakingly inserted the lat and longs in the Named Markers OxfordPaddington DCSV file by inserting the X and Y`s in each and naming them consecutively, e.g.:

<X d:type="sFloat32" d:alt_encoding="000000A0B0FDC6BF" d:precision="string">-0.1847076416015625</X>
<Y d:type="sFloat32" d:alt_encoding="000000E04DC24940" d:precision="string">49.11017490366764</Y>
<Name d:type="cDeltaString"> 24.Caen</Name>
</cCSVItem>

</cCSVItem>
<cCSVItem d:id="295287248">

<X d:type="sFloat32" d:alt_encoding="000000A0B0FDC6BF" d:precision="string">-0.14642715454101562</X>
<Y d:type="sFloat32" d:alt_encoding="000000E04DC24940" d:precision="string">49.09477773390397</Y>
<Name d:type="cDeltaString"> 25.Caen</Name>
</cCSVItem>

</cCSVItem>

Yes that`s right I`m up to 25 markers for a Caen to Paris route. And many more to go. Again is there a way to read the marker csv file in its entirety without this huge task of hand writing it in...

Hi,

That process seems to be a rediculous amount of work to me, ingenious and creative but tedious. There IS a MUCH less painful way. This is a bit of a learning Curve but Nothing like what your doing .

first off....
http://steam4me.railpage.org.au/trainsi ... emaps.html

read this and then after the part where you save the *******.GPX ( has a 1000 point limit. but you can have a few files if the need be)
use MS Excell 2003 to open the GPX and change the format so colum A has the Long and coloum B has the lat.clear out the extra lines at the top and the bottom then save it as a csv file.

then follow the RS dev docs "1.03 Route Marker Creation.pdf" to get the marker file into RS
this gives you a series marker file which will give you a line on the landscape for your track.
I am making the dangerous presumption your using the E release and NOT the NA one, only because the currant Dev docs
(as at 03/feb/2008)only work the E release until the new ones are released after the patch.

then use a named marker file created from a KML file from google earth for the locations of features like stations and things.

I cant believe the amount of work the current proccess your doing must be taking.

Ross

Thanks for that. I used RS_Tools to convert the Google points file gpx to csv. That was no problem.

I have the NA version of the sim. That's why I haven't been able to use the tools. So any advice I've been following has been outside the use of the dev tools so far. In fact I was using some of the postings related to route creation which were posted before the dev tools were released for the E version. I was hoping there was an easy way for the 'Named Marker...' file to read the csv file without having to write each xy point in the marker file. I'm actually using the 'Named Markers Oxford Paddington' file and adding the xy coordinates to that.

HI,
In all honesty , personally I would use the time until the patch allows the Development tools to be used with the NA version to perfect the joys of track building. Using the tools to deal with the marker files will seem like taking to butter with a hot knife compared to your currant task, but I fully understand the joys of succeeding at a self imposed challenge.

No I agree. Just anxious to do some terrain building especially since I've been able to get that srtm data in a route. Looks like I'll have to bide my time though for everything else.
