I had spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to raise large areas of terrain from sea level to 100 metres etc., and a query 'in another place' (the official Railsim site) brought the response that it can be done without using the Dev tools, but didn't say how! I have now sussed one way of doing it, but I suspect it might not be the easiest way!
Select the terrain brush in the top tools frame. Select the 'undulations' tool in the middle frame, and look for the 'defines height above sea level' button in the bottom frame (it doesn't appear for all of the terrain tools). Select that and change the height value and then sweep slowly around the area you want raised. It will be undulating to an alarming degree! Then select the 'smooth terrain' tool and slowly go over it all again. This brings the terrain down quite a few meters, so I had to do those two procedures two or three times to achieve the right height. After that the terrain will still need to be adusted and smoothed in small areas as you lay track and scenery etc, but the big job has been done at least fairly quickly
Does anyone know of a quicker easier way of doing it please?.

Re: Raising large areas of terrain quickly
Instead of using the two tools you mention, use the other level tool in the same window. Hold your cursor over the icons for a few seconds and the names of each tool will be shown if you need reminding about what each tool does.
Select the level tool and then set the height in the very bottom left hand window. A plus value will be above sea level and a minus value below sea level.
Set the size of the paid brush to say 100m (too large and it may take a long time to react) and then paint the area you want to be raised or lowered. This will all end up at the height you defined very quickly.
This tool is useful for creating flat areas in any terrain so that stations, houses, factories or any other objects can be placed on level ground even if it is half way up a mountain!

Re: Raising large areas of terrain quickly
Probably depends on how much RAM you have, I have 1 gig and I can go up to 300 for the brush size without slowdowns, 400 I get delayed reactions. The "noise" or undulation tool works very nicely, thing to bear in mind with that is base to height ratio - in other words set the height to 200 and the brush size to 100 you're going to get those camel humps, set the height to 100 and brush size to 300 and you won't need to use the smoothing tool afterwards.

To make higher mountains do it the way nature does, large area of foothills then raise the center more. Further fooling with the snap terrain to track magnet;

Re: Raising large areas of terrain quickly
Many thanks for those replies. I was sure there should be an easier way! I have as much Rail Sim documentation as possible on computer, and I do read it all, but there still seems a lot of trial and error involved, which at my age is a bit head bashing! I appreciate this forum no end, and read it regularly and always make notes.
