GNER To Kings Cross - Northbound!?
Yesterday, one thing which confused me was the fact that whilst at Leeds station, a GNER service from Leeds to Kings Cross, calling at Doncaster, Peterborough and Kings Cross I think, went Northbound towards York to Kings Cross. How is that possible?

Perhaps an HST with its First Class at the wrong end requiring turning?6rdfar90 wrote:Yesterday, one thing which confused me was the fact that whilst at Leeds station, a GNER service from Leeds to Kings Cross, calling at Doncaster, Peterborough and Kings Cross I think, went Northbound towards York to Kings Cross. It may have been heading for the Hambleton Chord (where the Selby line crosses the ECML), where it regains the southbound ECML and heads for Doncaster.
Electrification of the Leeds-Hambleton section was talked about when GNER bid in 2006, but seems to have disappeared with the demise of GNER...

My folks witnessed the same thing whilst on-board the 'Highland Chieftan' on Thursday afternoon.
They asked me so I said it was something to do with non-electrification.
Cheers

It doesnt rejoin the ECML - it goes straight over it to Selby. You cant join it northbound - not according to Multimap anyways.
And the First Class didnt need turning - there were people already on board

Chances are it will have headed to Hambleton and then turned south to Doncaster, which you definately can do. It's not uncommon, and there's the odd HST booked to do it to maintain route knowledge, but in the other direction I think. 91s will be dragged, usually by a 67. Common reasons for GNER needing to do it are engineering, train failure or, most common at the moment, cable theft at Ardsley or South Kirkby Jn.

If this was in the morning, 1A16 is booked via Hambleton on a saturday morning. 1A16 is the 07:44 Harrogate - Kings Cross

It was the 08:15 GNER service starting from Leeds. It's next stop was Doncaster.
