New Route Instructions

Post by FrankJ »

Hi All

I have been reading this section with great interest but I find that there are a lot of contradictory advice. Part of this is of course that a number of the most interesting threads pre-date the release of the Blueprint documents.

As Kuju have not produced a step by step guide to creating a new route is it possible for one of you more experienced developers to put something together that could be pinned to this area as guidence for us beginners.

I have managed to get the Blueprint to create and when I create a route from it I get the correct Co-Ordinates but the sky is at the bottom and the terrain does not seem to import. (Its a bit difficult to tell as its the Portsmouth Area and its a bit flat anyway.)

I then tried to find the files that had been created and all I could find was the .bin file. I did read that one should copy some directories (Sound etc) into my blueprint directory but othe advice suggested that Rail Sim should do it for me. So I am completely confused.

Hence this request.

Frank,

I had the same problem as you and checked, double checked and triple checked my entries in the blueprint editor to ensure they were all present and correct but still no terrain would show. I could lay track and buildings but no terrain was visible.

I have just found out I had incorrectly entered the Product field for the Terrain Blueprint Fields (Section 2.5.1.2). While all the other Product fields have the word RailSimulatorCore the Terrain Product field should just be RailSimulator.

Now I have lots of terrain and the SRTM data works a treat. Also if you follow the blueprints instructions there is no need to copy any files around.

A simple error on my part that had me scratching my head for a week.

Hope this helps you.

Marek.

Is filing these fields with data vital to the template working? I never bothered and wondering if that is why I keep getting the gray square grid.

In case anyone is willing to do it, I'd love to see step-by-step instructions on what you did to get the route template to work correctly with a new route. So far my most successful attempt resulted in KRS displaying the correct longitude (27 degrees) but leaving the latitude as 0. All other attempts resulted in both longitude and latitude being set to 0. I followed stuartrayner's post trying to accomplish this.

Many thanks to anyone who replies here!

*If this process is documented then maybe one of us here can write a simple tool to generate the needed files as it seems Kuju have made it really difficult to create a new route with the correct terrain and a latitude/longitude other than 0. Until I can figure out how to create routes the right way it still seems like renamed height files is an easier solution.

EDIT: As a programmer I can do such an app unless one of the other tech-oriented folks beats me to it but will still have to learn how to create a custom route manually first..

EDIT2: Figured it out! Apparently the bin file had to be read-only or else KRS ignores it. Would've never expected this to be the culprit..

Having looked at the blueprint editor I realised I was more at home messing around with XML files. A More wizard like interface would be helpful. (and no that isn't me offering to write one).

However having followed the instructions (yuck) I can see how much easier it is to use the Blueprint editor :-)
Only thing I haven't got is flags working for my route markers. They even appear in the right hand box :-) Pity I named them so badly for MSTS! But I think I need to redoo them anyway as I need ot get my co-ords off a 1 inch OS map, which I still haven't made a romer for.

Thanks for the responces. I'm glad to see that others agree the documentation could do with the edition of a simple step by step guide. I might try one myself if I ever get it working.

I'll als try the DEM tip again

Thanks
