Dev Tools, Vista, Unable to preview shape

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Dev Tools, Vista, Unable to preview shape

Post by steampsi »

The blueprint editor works fine under vista, but preview fails with "unable to preview shape". A quick dos box flashes up but I can't read the message.

Tried UAC off and setting folder permissions to full control but alas no luck. Stumped atm.

Anyone get the shape previewer working under Mr Vista ?

Are you trying to open it up in full screen? open in window mode.

No, not fullscreen, using windowed mode 1024x768 for RS and the developer version works fine, and blueprint editor opens in windowed mode too. Is that what you mean ?

It says successful build when preview is clicked, implying it has write privilige to the directory, just the previewer doesn't start.

Are you calling the 'Asset Editor' from the proper place? i.e. Start --> All Programs --> Rail simulator Developer Tools 1.0 ---> Tools --> Asset Editor ? (as opposed to just calling the Blueprint Editor on it's own?

I only ask because I've seen 'Unable to Preview Shape' when I've inadvertantly called the .exe directly. If you do that you get the Editor Window but not the Preview Window and so not surprisingly, it is unable to Preview the object. I think there's a command line option start_up_mode=depot that is needed to get the Preview Window.

I do have an earlier version of the the Dev Tools though, so apologies if this is not on the right tracks.

Okay that's the right answer, thankyou for the reply. A Eureka moment ... I didn't notice the tools sub directory under the start menu after install and thus used a shortcut to the exe. The sub directories under the start menu aren't as obvious as XP . Sheesh, too tired last night. Thanks for the support chaps.

In Vista the sim, when installed, is placed in Start>Programs>GamesExplorer along with the default Window's games. I naturally expected the shortcuts for the editor, etc, to be located in the same place. I too got caught out. Thanks for the tip, guys.
