Uninstalling KRS - Gee!

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Uninstalling KRS - Gee!

Post by mikesimpson »

As my own copy of KRS arrived yesterday from Just Trains (took 3 weeks due to UK postal strike), I had to uninstall the copy I had borrowed so that I could have a look at it and install the new one.

So I go to the Control Panel/Programs and Features, click on RailSim and select uninstall at which point I received a notice telling me that this operation would take approximately 1 hour :o Now I have uninstalled hundreds of programs in the past, and big suites like Office 2007 do take about 5 minutes, but 1 hour?

I have no idea what the uninstaller does, and to be fair it only took about 50 minutes, (and it did not delete the extra locomotives I had downloaded from the KRS site, but it did delete re-skinned textures I had made).

The re-install of my own copy went well and worked 'right out of the box', but I thought I would print my experience of this as I know a lot of users tend to reinstall programs every time they have a small error, this normally does nothing, but I suppose it makes them feel better.

Yes many people have found this. What OS are you using? Vista seems to be the culprit.

Mike,

The message "...takes approximately 1 hour" appears whether or not the program is installed on either XP or Vista. It certainly is quicker on XP than Vista, with Vista the uninstall routine spends an awful long time validating.

I think I read somewhere if you put the install disc in again an option window opens up then you have 3 choices
Modify, Repair, and Delete, this choosing delete completely removes the game quickly.

Like I said I think ??

If you already have a copy installed you only need to change the serial number in the registry. I can't remember off-hand where it is but it's easy to find in the HKLM hive.

You mean there are still people who do not use Vista?

I uninstalled KRS and got the "1 hour" message. But it only took a minute or two. I have XP, and I didn't have any add-ons. Just the basic out-of-box installation.

To be frank, the programming quality of this game really shows, especially in something as simple as an un-installer routine.

Every day I read this forum it becomes increasinbgly clear why Microsoft sacked Kuju from doing any more developing for them. In my list of . developers they come out even worse than Obsidian, and I never thought anyone would.
