Double Heading

Is it possible to drive two locos at once i.e as a double headed train. As you have to allocate a driver to the train I assume you cannot run two at the same time? The reason I ask is that I have just stalled ( ) with a Black Five climbing out of Bath and a second engine would be helpful!!

You can have more than one engine on a train, so it is possible but you can only have 1 driver per train.

I say that was quick! If you can only drive one of two on the same train then you are simply adding to the load with no benefit! It would be useful but I suppose the risk is you could be driving two separate trains towards each other!

Yes, I don't think it makes too much difference but give it a go (thats what I did).

Diesel+diesel appears to work for double headers although the physics seem slightly corrupted
Diesel+steam/Diesel+electric does not allow both locomotives to be powered at the same time. You will be in control of whichever loco's cab youare in as you move off.
I have not tested diesel+electric yet.

You can have steam double heading, but it only works if the two engines are seperate before you start.

Hi folks,
I too stalled with one Black Five and six Mk1 coaches a little way out of Evercreech up the 1 in 50. Then I placed two Black Fives coupled together in the middle track (between the platforms) at Evercreech Junction, went light engines to the sidings, coupled up to the same six coaches and went away with no bother. Both locos were obviously pulling well. Speed did drop to 20mph at one or two places before Masebury summit though, and neither engine had a driver or fireman.They probably jumped off in fright!
As a matter of interest I'm using an Acer 1694 laptop with no obvious problems so far!

I set up a test this in free-roam with a black 5 and 11 coaches at Green Park, which couldn't get up the first hill out of Bath. I re-edited the scenario to add a 7f coupled on behind the train and re-ran. This time it climbed the hill. I was using the black 5 at the head of the train as the driving engine and switching between the cam 2 and cam 3 shots gave different exhaust notes for both engines, as another poster had predicted, since they have different wheel sizes.

I tried a different test, this time from Evercreech Junction, with the Green 5MT and 5 coaches, which normally climbs up to Shepton Mallet OK. This time, I put a 7f behind it and inched forwards to couple up with the coaches. The 7f was now the driving engine, and I found it slower climbing up the gradients. I stopped at Shepton Mallet and uncoupled the 7f, then switched back to the Green 5MT and carried on. I shall have to repeat this test, but it seems to me that the driving engine is the one used for power calculation purposes, and it controls the other engine on the train. When the 7f was driving it didn't seem to get the combined power out of the train as the other experiment did. Or it could be the positioning of front and rear.

That's very interesting about the 7F banking. I'd just like to confirm that I was driving from the front Black Five on my double header.

I tried double heading and found that once I'd switched to the second engine's cab so I could open the throttle and release the brakes, I couldn't switch back to the lead engine using the 'Shift+2" (Head out of window) command. 'Shift+2' always put me into the second engine. I could however switch cabs using the 'shift -' and 'shift+' (I think) keys.

I also noticed that both from the cab of the second engine and from any remote cam, there was no exhaust showing from the first engine yet if I switch cabs, from the interior view, the lead loco sounded as though it was working.

I think the game program needs to be adjusted so that double headed steam works the same as m.ued diesels. The control of the lead engine also effects the controls of the second engine.
