Rail-Simulator.org

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Rail-Simulator.org

Post by drwho200 »

Hi,

Today I have released my site: http://www.rail-simulator.org to the public. The site will be a large collection of User Files for Rail Simulator. You are all welcome to come and take a look. It is designed to take the strain off sites such as UKTrainSim because you can upload your routes, trains, maps, scenarios etc. without limits! I am working on the Uploading part of the site but the main homepage is up! You can also Download Files Now. Send me any suggestions and I have placed a Link to UKTrainSim on the Links Page, I would like to ask for a link back if possible?
I hope you enjoy the site, a special development Forum is being launched as well specially for Rail Simulator Developers. Feel Free to PM me any Files you want uploading now, must be .zips with Readme file.

Thanks.

hmm, could you make the background expand for the diffrent resolution sizes of computers? (or how do you call it in english?)
Because i use 1680x1050, and just see a small picture in the corner, and the rest is white

How about you don't use one at all? Not everybody is on high-speed broadband and a 1.6MB background image is just ridiculous.

Sorry, I am going to convert it down to around 200KB for everyone on Dial-Up. The site is new and has just been released so please keep the comments coming.

Have you considered how you will support the hosting and bandwidth once people start uploading xxxMb size files (assuming EARS follows the same road as MSTS and Trainz for file sizes).

Have you liased with RSDL as regards any controls required for management of content, dependencies etc.?

Appreciate the enthusiasm but have a feeling if EARS does indeed take off you will have a mammoth management task and bandwidth requirement on your hands.

I have sent them an e-mail about that kind of thing. The site may use ads but I would prefer if Shareware Developers paid to have Banners on the Home Page, I have a great friend who is providing this and there shouldn't be any limits as such on Bandwith as he is a Hosting Provider who has servers here in the EU.

Where the servers are located doesnt make a bit of difference as to how much bandwidth and file size is available!

I wish you luck but I really do think you will struggle.

Thanks for the concern but I know my provider has enough space and bandwith available.

I would also like to use this Post to say that the File Uploader now Works!!

Keep in mind that even with the extensive limits in place here at UKTrainSim, we still use around SIX TERABYTES of bandwidth EVERY MONTH.

Without limits, i'd imagine it ten times that.

Matt.

Yes, thats why I am inisting on .zip files only. I will be putting a few banner spaces on the new site design to bring in some cash to support the B/W. Also, users may donate as well in order to keep the site up.

A new design is on the way.

6TB is an awful lot of Bandwith! But UKTS does have a shop.

To help any French Readers I have added links direct to the Google Translator Page with the Translation of my site. It looks ok but I don't speak fluent French.
