Something New From B&SE

Post by andrewgadd »

I’ve done something that I’ve had in my mind for ages now…

The screenies show XTracks UKNG track sections, but with a little added B&SE magic.

The concept is to build a plausible 7 ¼ ” gauge railway in MSTS. The screenie with Badger is just to give you some perspective.
Effectively, I have built a new 3D model of sleepers/ballast and placed it under the UKNG track sections (the sleeper textures of which have been masked out). The 3D model is then lined up perfectly by editing the world file.
I think this can be achieved without so much stress as I am only modelling a miniature railway and so should not have to do miles and miles of railway. If I use the only a few different track sections I should not have to make to many sleeper/ballast section.
I am also making the most of the fact that UKNG track sections hover ¼ meter above the terrain!

Exceedingly good news, perhaps one of my other plans may come into fruition after all (not saying yet though, you'll just have to wait and see!)

Thanks for the comments guys.
I have found a few more hours to experiment with this project, mostly with points and establishing a track layout that can be repeated within a route but does not use too many shapes.
What do you guys think of the pointwork below?

It's looking good - I wonder if the rail is a bit light, bearing in mind the overscale loads it will have to carry - particularly as the proportion of the population who are clinically obese increases!

Agreed. It needs some 80 pound rail with concrete sleepers I say!

Again, thanks for the comments guys.
It must be appreciated that I am not building any track sections here. I've been there and done that, loads of hassle adding the sections to tsection.dat + uploading to XTracks etc...
This is just an exercise in making shapes to fit under UKNG track sections already extant in XTracks. This means that the one thing that can't be altered is the rails.
Have added a x4 scale figure (my mate "fat bloke") to give a better idea of the scale.
This is 7 ¼ " in MSTS.

Concrete sleepers in 7 1/4 inch gauge are too rough, the wear on the rails/wheels is too great, for the EWR we use both Wooden and Plastic sleepers which have more give in them than solid types like concrete (plus I wouldn't want to ride on them being as they give a VERY rough ride ;))

Anyhow, back on topic, the point work looks brilliant Andrew, but perhaps the rails could be made to look a little heavier, as stated above they appear a little light for 7.25"

Keep up the work anyhow, we would all love this scale to prove successful in MSTS!

[edit] you posted whilst I was typing ;) OK the track weight will have to stay the same, but still, good work on getting the track looking right.

I'm inclined to agree there. Many 7.25" gauge lines do use very light rail, in my experience it's only places like the Moors Valley that use heavier-duty stuff. At any rate I don't think it's a problem so big it can't be overcome.

Anyway, excellent work Andrew, and I very much look forward to seeing 7.25" gauge routes for MSTS! 8)

Bob Washington at the WHR (P) uses very chunky rail but alliminuim.

I'm was kidding. I think the track is excellent just the way it is. If only you could have standard gauge track that light.....
