Four Days With K4 No. 61994 "The Great Marquess"

Post by JonathonAG »

Okay, might be abit of a long post, so bare with me.

Thursday - Well, Class 47 No. 47245 passed through Cowdenbeath with the A4/K4 Support Coach Heading to Thornton. No. 61994 was being steamed that night in preperation for the engine movement on the Friday from Thornton to Bo'ness. It was difficult to get good shots because of dying light....so any shots with good sky effects made the locomotives tooo dark on photos, and any with sufficient brightness on the locomotives made the sky tooo light and brand. But luckily, a miracle happenned ( abliet without a tripod ) that i managed to get two photos with different exposures in the exact same position....so when doctored and mixed gives a great end result:

Friday - Friday morning the K4 was to be towed with support coach by the same 47 which featured from the previous day. Luckily I had the orthodentist on the Friday morning so had a bit of time after it to go see the movement at Burntisland. The convoy sounded great as it passed, 61994 whistling ever so loudly:

Saturday - The first day of the West Highlander.....got off on a very bad foot....or should that be very bad footing from the K4. Due To A Slippage On The Way To Helensburgh, Which Resulted In The Train Running Close To 2 Hours Down From Then Onwards. And Because Of This, Paths Were Lost So The Mallaig Sections Were To Run 4 Hours Behind Schedule. This Late Timing, Plus Bad Weather Plus Family Commitments...Led To Not Many Photographs....Compared To The Many We Had Planned To Do If It Were To Time. However, did get some nice photos and it was great seeing "The West Highland Moguls both in the same day, same place. Would have been nicer seeing them this morning at Fort Bill in the yard both facing the same direction and perhaps lined up beside each other. Oh well:

Sunday - Well....if I'm honest, I haven't seen "The Great Marquess" yet today. This is only because I wasn't able to follow Day 2 of "The West Highlander". However, she is scheduled to come through Cowdenbeath tonight so I'll report back here and complete my four day guide to following the K4 once I have seen her. Not saying what the plans are for where I'll see her tonight however....I'll leave that as a surprise

I should really change the Title to "Three Days", as today did not go well at all.

The tour arrived on time according to reports.....but Jack Prentice was at Linlithgow and had waited almost an hour only to recieve gen that the move from Eastfiled to Thornton for the K4 had been cancelled. So, only just hearing now that it ran two hours late ( supposedly came through here at 21.35 ), has caught us both by surprise. I'm kicking myself for this, but oh well, such is life....plus wouldn't have got any good photos....but a video at Cowdenbeath would have been brilliant with the engine working in the dark.
