Harwich - Manningtree & beyond

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Harwich - Manningtree & beyond

Post by AndyG »

I am looking for some feedback for an expansion to my route. I am planning to extend as far as Ipswich to the North and as far towards London as I can. That is if I can get the display problems with my Laptop and RE sorted!!!

1. Would people prefer Electrified or not?

2. Semaphore of Colour light signalling?

3. Branch Lines included or just the Main Lines?

4. Has anybody got any track plans or layout diagrams that could be useful to me?

well, i'd like:
electric
colours
branch lines

and guess what... no maps!

though that's probably a bit much, it is a major undertaking!

whatever you can do to the standard of the branch would be great! i may even learn to drive a steam train if it requires that

1. Not Electrified Ipswich,Harwich to Colchester, Electrified to London

2. Semaphore (Edmund Kinders) between Manningtree & Colchester
plus Harwich Branch (NB I know locations of these plus Signal Boxes too).

3. Felixstowe, Clacton & Sudbury Branch.

4. Got a rough idea of what goes where, could do diagrams if that would
help.....Check your PM.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can have half the route electrified...

Well I'd like to see it run into a large town, with possibly a freight yard, so I can make some freight runs.

Don't know if you know about this, but at one of the starting points there is a raised level crossing. There's usually a lorry parked at the gates but other traffic follows a straight line through the embankment and does not follow the carspawner contours. Is there a fix for this?

Well in real terms....up until 1985 the line was electrified to the Ipswich
Road Rail Bridge.

In MSTS terms........If you can't do that.......then go for electrification, then
if you don't want it electrified remove gantries..

Pleased this thread was posted as I've only recently downloaded it and would like to say well done 8)

1) I've a 1971 ER timetable and the variety of trains then would makes pre-electrification attractive but as has been said it could be made 'optional' by removing the 'gantries'.

2) Colour lights

3) Extension to Ipwich and Colchester would seem logical as that would give a decent run to either plus a bit of main line running between the two. That would be a logical 2nd stage and not too ambitious.

4) Sorry no plans .... there's a PC Rail sim of Ipswich which gives the 'signalled' running lines .... which you probably know about.

The branch itself is a modellers line in that it has a bit of everything .... IC .... DMU .... freight .....

Over half a dozen shunters alone in 1981 .... trip freights .... the lot.

Very few activities .... big shame.

Genuinely very impressed Andy .... if I can be of assistance .... PM me and I will give you my e-mail address.

PS Altered the default consists to provide a 'full' trainset of my James Hunts reskins of Mk2 and Mk1 restaurant stock.

In short the best 'all new' MSTS 'Standard Gauge' route I've seen.

I even downloaded O.S Maps from Harwich to Ipwich to Colchester last night in case no further additions to the route were planned.

Well done

John

actually, i quite fancy running class 40s and stuff up there...

if i were making it then i'd be wanting to to ipswich to felixstowe, lowestoft and norwich. and then the lines from norwich too. they'd suck if i did it the way i'd like to. can't see much scope for activities with the current service, and i wouldn't want to have the anglia colourscheme on any of my trains!

i'd support the 1971 way of doing things now!
