question: gradients

The Rail Simulator forum was very busy leading up to the UK release on October 12th 2007, this is a read-only copy of those discussions for historic and review purposes.

question: gradients

Post by jibjub »

hi, i was just wandering would KRS be able to have routes such as Snowdon mountain railway built or would this be too steep a gradient?

cheers

If what I was told last year by Kuju is still the case, then modelling the Snowdon Mountain Railway will not be possible as narrow gauge track will not be supported in the first version, neither will "tight" curves..ie radii less than around 75m.

Unless either what I was told was wrong then....or is wrong now.

Adam?? Can you confirm/correct/deny/whatever?? This will have a very important bearing on all narrow gauge and tram route builders.

I second the request please. I was looking forward to re-doing Blackpool and a narrow gauge route would provide a more realistic project in terms of timescale for the limited time I now have for such things.

If tight curves are not possible why not just make giant sized track and work in a different scale?..... camera angles would need to be adjusted.

Anyone who has built a tram route will realise how fundamental the availability of tight radii curve track sections is to the realism of the route.

It is possible to have near vertical gradients in Rail Simulator. The specifc authoring tool as well as the ability to post edit gradients on already laid track make this area of route building far more accessible and accurate.

Thanks for that, Adam.

But there were two questions....and you've only answered one!

This is basically what we have been doing with MSTS to simulate NG.

It would be nice if we didn't have to go through this rigmarole with the Kujusim. Adam, a definative answer as to whether NG/tram routes are going to be feasible with the sim, would be appreciated.

Cheers,

near vertical
Oh good, someone may model the world's steepest railway - the Katoomba scenic railway in Australia.

The track is up 52 degrees or 1 in 0.82 or 122% steep.

Needs a bit of sand to get started in the wet ...

Seconded.

Why, oh why can't a simple question be answered.

Unless the lack of an answer really means..NO NARROW GAUGE OR TRAM ROUTES POSSIBLE! Which can only damage KRS's sales! (Actually, it won't damage sales as far as I'm concerned. I have no intention of purchasing until tram route are possible)

There seems to be a lot of wild speculation here.

I was under the impression that one would be able create whatever track system one wanted including dual gauge and monorail.

I believe that I could have done a better job with Romney and could have made it to true scale. There are no plans for doing Romney for K.R.S. at the moment however.

Where did people get the idea of a minimum radius from?

Please could someone point out to me where it says:

"The minimum radius will be nn metres."

A definitive statement form KUJU would be most welcome.

The info on min radii came from KujuClare in reply to a question about NG trackwork. I think she stated a min radii of 50 mtrs which may just suffice for "mainline" type NG routes. Afterwards, I seem to remember reading that the Kujusim producer was quoted as saying that the min radius would actually be 70m. This would rule out most NG routes. Unfortunately, the search facility of this site doesn't work correctly on my computer, so can't find the actual quotes.

(edited as wrong radius info was originaly posted)

i would just like to tack something on the back of this.

with MSTS gradients you often feel a "kink" when coming to a hill or slope. Will KRS still have kinks to make hills ?
