putting back a route

Post by jow104 »

If I save a personel route to a C.D. can I put it straight back into MSTS ROUTES EVEN THOUGH I have reinstalled MSTS since making the route copy on the CD.
I appreciate that I would have to make a consist . but is this all.

course you can BUT!!!

You must make sure if you have Activities, service and traffic in the route then you must make sure you have the relevant loco's stock and consists in the sim.

The best thing is to just leave your "paths " folder intact and reload the route with the Activities, services and traffic empty. this will avoid the potential for disaster.

Dont forget if you copy files to a CD, then copy them back, they are all read-only so you get strange errors if the system needs to write to them. In a route that won't normally matter, unless you want to ammend existing activities etc.

putting back a route

Many thanks to Tim Court and asalmon for your replies.Your instructions re route reinstallation worked perfectly. I naturally put in the other route folders and fioes in addition to the 4 you mentioned.

Hi
Can you elaborate on the read only aspect of cd's.
I have recently bought a new computer - Athlon 1800, 500meg ram and GForce3 TI.
I have produced a New Zealand route that is circulation here on cd.
That is not a problem and the route appears to be loading and running fine.
On my new system I am having all sorts of trouble with the same version.
I installed MSTS onto my new machine and busily loaded up most of the features present on my old system, conbuilder, patch, sky control etc.
When I run my route, part way through it gives me strange noises over the speakers and then crashes. No messages, just freezes and then quits back to the desktop. This is erratic, sometimes will give me a run through the route but generally occurs around the same spot when running the route from either end of the route.
I have been offered advice re the sound card (onboard) turning down acceleration but no good.
I'm probably getting right away from cd read only but seeing that message prompted me to try the forum for some advice. I will be taking it to the doctor after the weekend but would appreciate some feedback here.
It may even be something I have downloaded which drives me even more to despair.
Cheers

Hi Neville,

The CD you sent me of your route works fine under Windows XP, so looks like the sound card or something in your Windows drivers needing looked at.

Hi Mike
Thanks for the reply, I was thinking you were probably getting sick of me so left you alone. I think your right, so it's to the doctor and into the guarantee from the company.
I can't progress until I get this fixed and its driving me nuts.
Cheers

Yes, MSTS is rather fussy with drivers etc.

Also to further complicate the issue, what I said about files being read-only when copied back from CD does not apply to XP!

Thanks for the help team, I always appreciate the information from this forum and the willingness of others to share.
Another learning curve coming up due to the vagrancy of MSTS.
Cheers
