Withdrawn 1.7.xxxxxx

Post by rosssweet »

Noticed George has withdrawn all version 1.7.xxxxxx from his site,
I find MSTS BIN 1.7.022420 the most stable version of all.
Would not like to return to Version 1.6.

The latest patch 1.7.051220 wouldn't work on some class 37s, "Loch Long" for example unless i increased the adhesion to stop wheelslip, I looked at the MT GE class 37s which worked and changed to that setting, that stopped wheelslip , but to achieve some wheelslip when accelerating too fast is good i think. Bit of a fine line maybe...

I saw that there seems to be a fix for the wheel slip issue by changing number of wheels in the eng and wag sections and so was about to download, but it's gone! I take it the stable version isn't up anywhere else.

Hopefully there will be a fix soon and it will be out again!

What George has done for this sim is incredible, can't wait for this to be out and working properly.

I wonder if this is anything to do with the vitriolic postings about Bin 1.705 over on Train-sim.com, which have resulted in Otto withdrawing from there (as well as here)? The latest versions are still available to download on the other two mirror sites - it has only been removed from the English mirror.

Alan

Please have a look at my railway photograph site - http://alan-lewis-chambers.fotopic.net/ - lots of British steam and early diesels

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

Still Persevering with BIN 1.7.05122 and find that if I modify some stock it seems to be working alright.

Changing only the Adheasion settings on some stock, they work well, displaying the wheelslip if accellarating too fast. Which is good.

Comment ( original class 37 - Adheasion ( 0 1 0.238 0 ) ** must modify for Bin 1.70512 ** )
comment ( note MT is - Adheasion ( 0.2 0.4 2 0 ) ** use this one, only change needed ** )

Adheasion ( 0.2 0.4 2 0 )
DerailRailHeight ( 4cm )
DerailRailForce ( 2.5*107t )
DerailBufferForce ( 500kN )
NumWheels ( 12 )
Friction (
1459N/m/s 0 1mph 11.54N/m/s 1.8
5.1N/rad/s 1 -1rad/s 0 1
)

Notice most diesels already have this setting,
It's worth the change seeing all the work George has put into the patch.

You must understand, the anger was in no way directed at George and his efforts. The ire was directed at Otto. Concerns grew that he was telling George what he wanted was the concensus at T-S. As you can tell from the posts, the feeing was that he was not cummunicating our concerns.

re bin1.7

Post by gallop3ta »

Agree fully there Kevin ,
Probably better for us all to post any bugs direct to George's page.
This way we at least know that George is getting the info himself and not getting filed in B for bin. Excuse the pun
The one thing I fear is to what George has been told by he who shall
remain nameless.
We all are so much indebted to George for his hard work, and would hate to see an end to it because of one ego centric individual.
Cheers

Just to point out, that the person concerned removed his own posts here.

Hi All

We must collectively support George with his Fantastic Efforts with his MSTSBin as the improvements he has made to MSTS are mind boggling.

I have read all the postings both here and on TrainSim.com and very fortunately the majority of postings are "positive ones" to assist George so please let us all keep it that way.

It is a pity re Otto as he was trying to help George but I feel that his "enthusiasm" may have been trying to take over what George is trying to achieve as obviously George has "Cracked the MSTS Code" and he is the one and only person who deserves full credit for his magnificent efforts with MSTS.

We are all supporting you George

Kindest Regards

Hi, I think that the main reason George has withdraw the patches is to do with the wheelslip issue. I posted this on the trainsims forum and the jargon thats come out is unbelieveable.
http://forums.flightsim.com/ts/dcboard. ... page=#2496
If you are having trouble with engines not moving ,make a back up copy of the .eng file and then change the Adhesion parameter to the MSTS default ( 0.2 0.4 2 0 ) it will work then.

Hi All,

Mike Wood is absolutely right. George and his BIN Project have made the Sim into something that most of us thought could never be.

Having visited Georges' site, it seems that all he has done is reverted back to the last known fully stable version which 1.6.10xxx or something.

I am currently running 1.70224 with no particular problems, but I drive mainly diesels.

IMPORTANT.

I would say these latest problems with wheel slip have highlighted a major issue regarding standardisation regarding the adhesion and tractive effort. My view is that reasonably authentic performance of locos and less so the rolling stock is essential for enjoyment of the sim. Therefore, the following need to be considered from the wagon section of an eng file.

Adheasion ( 0.2 0.4 2 0 )
DerailRailHeight ( 10cm )
DerailRailForce ( 2.5*103t )
DerailBufferForce ( 800kN )
NumWheels ( 3 )
Friction (
1049.9N/m/s -0.10 1.0mph 10.624N/m/s 1.871
5.1N/rad/s 1 -1rad/s 0 1
)

Adhesion Parameters in the first line- should be standardised for the type of locomotive ( diesel, steam, electric)

Next three lines are set to prevent derailments in accordance with Realmuto.

Numwheels- as said elsewhere this is used in a simple formula in the original version to calculate adhesion and tractive effort. If varied the tractive effort varies. The higher numwheels is set the less traction. This feature should be maintained for fine tuning. I do not keep this as the number of bogies or number of wheels on the loco.

Friction- in this example for a Deltic, the friction has been calculated using fcalc. This is not essential but is recommended as it gives a better feel for the running performance. Note: I use fcalc as recommended calculating the friction using numwheels as the number of bogies. The second line in the friction parameters is apparently unused by MSTS!

For authentic performance I have found that the above combined with 'correct' figures for max power, maxcontinuous effort and max speed (always set slightly above the official figure), give quite realistic performance.

Regarding the second numwheels figure in the engine section I have never altered this and it aways seems to be left at (1). If this could be used in some way to generate real wheelslip when powering off from a stand that would be great. Manipulating the wagon section figures to do this unfortunately creates poor performance at normal running speeds. I believe this is the problem with a lot of US stock and some UK stock.

Just a small word of caution here, I think that you will find that the original KUJU steam programming is very different from the diesel and electric programming and were probably done by a different person.

The adhesion parameters in particular work differently and using a standard entry like you propose will elliminate slipping and is already done in physics files for AI and MU versions of steam loco's, but steam engines did slip, especially on starting, and this is part of the driving experience to control this.

There appears to be one great improvement that could be made to the .bin upgrade and that is to allow the user to opt in or out of various features available.

I would be quite happy to use some of the file management features on their own to improve the issues found in the existing sim, however I have seen nothing here to convince me that the train I would be driving will be any more drivable than the train I am driving now.

The extended head up display is also useful for testing.

Remember the early days when every steam locomotive got the Golsdorf or Scotsman .eng file by default, what I see here is pointing backwards, not forwards, mainly for "Game Playing" effects.

It was bad enoeugh doing beta testing for Uncle Bill, I don't need to do this again for the .bin modifications.

These points were raised some time ago with our departed friend and the response was "Use a diseasel" or something like that.

Serious issues, but given in the spirit of improvement.

Hi all, An observation,We seem to be slipping into the same realms as our friends across the pond and Mike no disrespect but all that jargon is just a waste of space to me and probably 90% of trainsimers who just want to relax and run an activity from end to end and not suddenly find that because George has used the correct Adhesion Parameters in the last bin patch, other people tweaking has caused me to find out that some of my downloaded engines would not run. I am using the very latest bin patch
V1.7.0512 and now that all my Class 37s are sorted out I shall for the time being continue to use it because it is great. ( A1 steaming fab ) :D
