GMax help for a steam newbie

Post by cyberhippy »

Hi everyone,

First of all, please accept my apologies if my query has already been covered elsewhere! I did a search but not much appeared.

Having been a diesel/electric nutter for years, I'm now getting into the steam thing. I've been trying to make a basic model of my 'Hornby' Class 0F 0-4-0. The only problem is -

How do I animate the 'con-rods',etc?

Basing my animation on a 'Trainz' tutorial, I used a 'Look At' constraint with the con-rods 'looking' at the pistons, which works fine in GMax, but when I export the model, only the coupling rods between the wheels rotate properly when I look at the model in 'Shapeviewer'!

I'm probably doing something wrong which is blindingly obvious, as animations work fine on my diesel models (including rods), but any help would be gratefully received, before I'm driven (even further) to drink! :drinking:

Cheers, take care,

Stig

The object groups have to have the correct names for MSTS to animate them properly. Read the Tech Docs in the folder on the MSTS CD.

Hope that helps,

I read the Tech Docs and thought I understood them, but perhaps I was wrong!

I tried exporting again, and the con-rods went all over the place!

The parts at the moment are named MAIN, PISTON1, WHEEL1, MAIN_WHEEL_LINK, ROD01 and WHEEL2. From ROD01 they're linked back through the list to MAIN (clear as mud I know, but I couldn't attach a screen-grab).

The naming and/or the heirarchy are probably 'all to .', so any pointers are very welcome.

Cheers,

Stig,

Your naming isn't correct - WHEEL1 should be WHEELS1.

Simplify your heirarchy, I have most things attached to main, only animated parts & bogies have subtrees.

This for the 0415 with the connecting rod on the leading driven axle.

MAIN
-----WHEELS1
--------------CONRODPT
--------------CONRODSTB
--------------COUPLPT
--------------COUPLSTB
-----WHEELS2
------ROD01
------ROD02

ROD01 & ROD02 are the crossheads - linked to MAIN, not to the wheel. MSTS always accepts these names, proper names are more quirky.

MSTS looks for WHEELS1 to animate, anything linked to it can have any names.

Hope this helps.
