What can I use to open .s files?

Post by TylerDurden »

This will probably sound like a realy stupid simple question but what can I use to open and view .s files?. I need to look at a model of a loco so its easier to texture it. I have G-Max and TSM but none will load .s files :(.

There isn't any freely available utility for this that I know of, and you'll find that most modellers actually frown on anyone who tries to create one. The reason of course is that once someone uploads such a utility the floodgates are open and all sorts of abuses will take place.

If its just for texturing, why not check out the *.ace files that came with the model?

I personally think for texturing purposes this is OK - there's a small section which maps texture files to texture numbers which I quite often fiddle with - you can use this to keep all your retextured versions of a loco in one Trainset folder.

Use the MSTS ff_editc utility to decompress the .s file and then use Wordpad (Notepad will do on NT/2000/XP) to edit it.

Note - I always send out my tram .s files uncompressed so that people can do this.

Normaly I can reskin any model with ease, but the Class 08 Im re-skinning has parts mapped to loads of different places, and at the moment Im working it out by colouring the skin in rainbow colours, then running the game and seeing what part is what colour so I know where its mapped to on the art file, but this is a realy long process.

Thanks anyway.

Maybe the best thing to do is contact the creator of the 08 and ask if they would send you a file that you could investigate - that way they are aware of the work being done to their model and you will probably find that they are more than happy to help / explain how the mapping was done (providing they can remeber of course :-) )
