FGW - MTU Engined Power Cars - Another fire - Major Faults?

Post by ArrivaTrains »

Yet another MTU Engined FGW Powercar (43179) caught fire today, whats going on?

The FGW website simply says it has "Broken Down" :-?
7 March 2007
Train services between Reading and London Paddington have been disrupted due to a broken down train in the Burnham area. Short notice alterations, cancellations and delays of up to 40 minutes may still occur.

Train services have returned to normal, but some delays are still expected.
Hopefully Brush will sort this, I mean is this the 3rd "MTU'd" hst fire in as many weeks now?

It's 4th I believe, and that is two on the same powercar, not sure which was involved today.

Bring back the paxman valenta's. They never seemed to catch fire.

There are rumours this was an electrical issue, and not an engine/ exhaust fire.

Probably off topic, but can I just ask . . . I presume the re-engined HSTs have lost that beautiful whislting/whining sound?

What do they sound like now?

Yep, really really quiet, you can hardly hear them working when they're under power from my experience. Really are quite something.

Better start bashing HST powercars with Paxman Valentas in!

and yes pulling away is just a slight change of chugging note, they are very quiet! The idea being that when the fleet is fitted this will permit Notch 5 departures, which are currently restricted following complaints from various councils (and Ken Livingstone)

Well, that's a very underwhelming sound. The HST has lost some of it's character, as with all modern stuff (this applies to everything, not just transport).

Just out of interest, didn't some GNER 43s have those revised light clusters before MTU fitment?

They are too quiet now for my liking. Watched the 11.55 depart Newcastle yesterday. On the front was the mtu and on the rear was the valenta. You could tell the difference though.

Tis a shame, used to love hearing them scream through Duffield (5 mins north of Derby) with that scream.

this is probably the best you'll get from an MTU

the front is MTU and back is Valenta
