Route objects not working

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Route objects not working

Post by tender »

Hi everyone,
I thought I would have a go at building an Underground route today so I downloaded the LU clutter (ID: 15804), then copied the relevant text from the "Add to ref.txt" file to the .ref file of my new route and moved the SHAPES and TEXTURES files to the corresponding folders. I then went into Route Editor to see if the objects were available but they were not on the list.

Can someone help me? :n00b:

Hi

When you look at the available scenery items box, is there a new section in the dropdown box call IJ LU ? If there is, the new set of scenery items will be in this section all on their own.

Hi there,

Make sure that the added references to the ref. file is laid out in a similar format as below (I am using the example of two shapes Ive made):

Static (
Class ( "LU Network Custom" )
Filename ( Subsurfroofcvd100mstrt.s )
Align ( None )
Description ( "Sub Surface Curved Roof 100mstrt" )
)

Static (
Class ( "LU Network Custom" )
Filename ( Subsurfroofcvd105mstrt.s )
Align ( None )
Description ( "Sub Surface Curved Roof 105mstrt" )
)

The most common cause of something not showing up on the list of object in RE I have seem to find is the gap between two objects, or there being no gap between the writing and brackets. Modify the ref.file objects to a format such as above and you should be fine.

Any further problems, and you can either PM me or respond in this thread.

Edit: You beat me to it Doug with an equally relevant suggestion (why didnt I think of that first :oops: ).

It is a problem I also had when I started on routebuilding a year ago. There is a simple solution for this problem when you have Route_Riter. Open Route_Riter and select the REF file from your route in the left box, and than press the ".Ref File Editor" button. You see the full list of the REF file. Close down the list and press the ".Ref File Editor" button again. Than you see the popup screen with the text that the Ref file is not unicode and that you have to press the "ASCII to Unicode" button in the "MSTS File Utils" part of Route_Riter. When you do this, Route_Riter will make all text in the REF file in the same alignment and textformat. Than the new objects will be available in the Route Editor :wink:

Hi again, thanks for the suggestions,

I tried to see if I could look at the object menu, to see if the was another folder within the route editor, but after pasting the object text into the .ref file the editor comes up with the error: "Error reading editor object selection file .ref - Line: 0",
when I undo the changes to the .ref file and re-save it still dislays this error. So I have to re-create the Geometry for the route again!
I also tried adding spaces between the objects, but the same error appears again! :(

Just had another thought....

Try opening the .ref file in Wordpad and then doing a "Save As" and save as file type Unicode text document.

You might have accidentally saved it as an ASCII text file which MSTS will fail to read.
