Games for Windows Portfolio

I had wondered why Kuju were going to be on the Microsoft stand.
Does this mean RS is Vista only? Would explain why Kuju are still demonstrating the same "special build" version of the sim which has not improved since it was first done. It's a pre-vista version only?
If this is so, is it good news or bad?

Well I hope not as my new PC is coming with Win XP SP2 and I have little or no intention of installing Vista until I have absolutely no choice. From what I've read it's primarily a multimedia platform rather than a gamer's platform.
Games for Windows portfolio...the flipside of that is they may be the only ones that do work properly with Vista. I have a very nice old back catologue of titles all of which work very well on XP thank you very much and have no wish to render them obsolete overnight.
So if KRS is Vista only it will be thank you and good night from this potential purchaser!

Hi Vern
You can read about the " Games for Windows Portfolio " HERE -- Read #2 " Games for Windows branded titles work on Windows XP and Windows Vista based PCs "
Nothing more than PR FUD for Vista .
KRS will install and play on XP - it is not a DX10 or Vista only game.
And you can safely ignore the standard CES press release Kuju have copied onto their website

Please not vista only.
I'm already feeling gutted that I sold my copy of MSTS and the adodns too early. If KRS is Vista only, that's another copy down.
To be fair, there is little (I hope) reason not to expect it might run on both, but then I do worry about if a DX9 version for XP is going to be as good as a DX10 version for Vista.

If you read this from the Games for Windows web site http://www.gamesforwindows.com/games/Ra ... etail.aspx it is a little confusing as it states the min requirements ( probably needs to be taken with a pinch of salt ) are Vista OS but in the memory requirements it mentions both XP and Vista. Im not really worried about it as I will dual boot with XP when Vista comes out.
One would think that Kuju would do it for both but only they know the answer at present

KRS will certainly run on XP. Anything else would be madness. Of course they will not tell you frankly or loudly while they receive big marketing support from Microsoft for producing a Vista-ready game (whatever that means).
MS cannot pay so much to Kuju that they will happily kick all those who do not go with the first flow of the hype. Besides, they want you to buy a physics coprocessor and some Philips vibrators, so it cannot be in the interest of Kuju if you spend all your money on a new PC only to be able to start up Vista (and maybe receive the same performance than on your old one with XP).
I for one certainly wait a bit, e.g., until SP2, like I did with XP, and I am happy I did.
By then the dust will be settled and it will be clear what you really get and at which cost.

The thing is that if it is Vista only they would lose a large part of the Market, so it will be compatible with Windows XP.
Also if it does support DX10 that would most problery be some form as patch as it is going to be for Company of Heroes

More marketing hype to try to get folks to buy Vista.
It would be commericial suicide for RS not to support the overwhelming XP user base at release. So it will.
Nothing like marketing BS to try & confuse everyone
I notice 'Rail Simulator' is a trademark now.
...yessss that's a bit sneaky isn't it or perhaps just slack. I have to laugh at the min CPU as 2.0 Ghz for intel but 2400+ if you have a lowly AMD. Sheesh. And what shader version is required? And the screen shots aren't screen shots. And a CD-ROM only is required? Surely RS will be released on DVD ?CaptScarlet wrote:If you read this from the Games for Windows web site http://www.gamesforwindows.com/games/Ra ... etail.aspx it is a little confusing as it states the min requirements ( probably needs to be taken with a pinch of salt ) are Vista OS but in the memory requirements it mentions both XP and Vista. Does that mean RS is becoming DX10? Does that mean more delay ?Richard Rogerson wrote: (re graphics) we're running on Vista, but using a RS version that hasn't taken advantage of the new system, so I'm looking forward to seeing that myself!

But the thing is that if it is limited to Shader Model 3.0 (the norm for all lastest graphics card's part from the 8800GTS/X which use's 4) Then again you would lose a large part of the market.
Also remeber AMD processors are clocked lower but are the same as the intels. E.g. My AMD Socket A 3200+XP is the same to a Intel Pentium 4. 3.2ghz.
And most problery it will be a DVD as personly i can't see it going on CD unless you want disk change during installtion

Rail Simulator is not Vista only - to date the builds have been developed on Microsoft's Win XP.scefhwil wrote:http://www.gameplanet.co.nz/mag.dyn/News/11429.html

If you think about it, it would be difficult to make it Vista only as when the product was annouced, I don't think even beta 2 was out. Now Vista has been released to manufacturing and will be launched this month, along with Office 2007 (Office 2K7 is total .) on the 19th and 20th of January. A two day launch event will be taking place in Reading.
