Mid Hants Railway - Itchen Abbass Station

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Mid Hants Railway - Itchen Abbass Station

Post by mjt222 »

All,

Has anyone got anything on Itchen Abbass Station ? This route must be getting on for one of the longest in terms of building time for MSTS, but progress is being made, albeit a little slowly ;)

The current version of the route now runs from nearly the old Winchester Unction to a section of track about a mile short of Bentley Station north of Alton. Thats as far as the existing tiles will take us, and i am lost whether I can add tiles or not :-? so will do for the first draft.

Anyway, back to the request, I have some stuff on the above mentioned station but need loads more, so if anyone has anything that they wouldnt mind sharing then can they please advise or email me via the link below.

Many Thanks in advance

Martin

I have one picture somewhere (from an old postcard). It's B/W and in a little book on stations in Hants.

Aside from the signal box being half way along the up platform with the main building being opposite it, it's not really any different from Alresford or Ropley, though (assuming I've got my up & down the right way round!)

The service was always Alton - Portsmouth/ Soton Terminus, AFAIK, so going beyond Bentley is not really necessary for accurate operations on the branch. The 1966 diversions used to stop at Alton generally to add another loco for getting up that hill.

Yep, just what I thought with reference Bentley. It does just add a little bit of character being able to go ebyond Alton and not seeing the end immediately at the station. I also have one pic, and it looks very similar to Alresford ;) But one pic is all I have :)

I assume you're doing it in the pre 193x situation where the loops at Ropley and Itchen Abbas were still in place?

(I'll get my one picture scanned once I can find it!)

In 1972, when the line closed, Ropley was a single platform. In it's heyday, it had 2 platforms and a couple of sidings. It never had a loco yard, or the shed would be something better than that tin shack (think about what's at Tunbridge Wells West, that's an original LBSCR shed). Medstead & Four Marks is probably the closest to how it was in the 1940s of the stations on the line now.

Anyway, are you including the signal box at Butts Junction? I think the Basingstoke line (and hence the box there) closed in 1936, so you'd have to put it in for the loops at Ropley and Itchen Abbas to be accurate... The siding to treloars hospital on the old basingstoke line survived until the 1960s. And of course, there's the meon valley, which lasted until 1955...

Right, its going to be a bit of a mix really.

Itchen Abbas will be as it was with passing loop, signal box etc etc
Alresford, Ropley, M&4M and Alton as they are today
Butts - no signal box

Once this is done I may then produce a version with as the line closed, in 1972 - not sure yet ;)

I reckon a 1930 version would be more interesting than a 1972 version - the only loop then was at Alresford, and it was nothing but 205s.

anyway, is this the image you already have? http://gpweb.no-ip.info/galleries/old_p ... b/fv63.htm

I've put the box in the wrong place in my mind - clearly it's on the platform (I still believe that to be the down platform, but there's no reason to trust my judgement on that!).

You tried asking the MHR? I'm sure Tony Wood would put your request on the letters page on the website.

I don't think the one in my book shows anything different. It was taken from (what i believe to be) the up platform, looking the same general direction, and focussed on the station building. Not located it yet...

Hi there
Good luck with the route.
My tutorial on adding tiles is at the top of the Route building forums. I have done it several times for my LNWR / MR route from Ashbourne to Buxton and (now) back down to Ambergate junction (then maybe some!).

The process isn't too hard but as always I recommend a backup of the route before hand. My tutorial is based on DEM'd data, I assume you are using DEM? If you have any problems then drop me a pm

DEM and trackwork was done by myself, so adding tiles shouldn't be too difficult. The MHR has been a bit quiet lately due to business at BATS and I've been busy with E-Rail, but will be nice to blow the dust off again and have another bash. I've got Alresford station model to texture somewhere....

If you are stuck for photos and information you could try the Hampshire records office which is right next to the station in winchester they may have something?
