Download speeds

Post by jbilton »

Hi
Generally speaking the speed from UKTS seems to be half that of other sites.
I get about 350Kb/s max, I can get 700Kb/s .
What do others get?
Cheers
Jon

I get whatever NTL decides I should get.

Normally about 20Kb/sec when it should be 1Mb/sec... :(

Pesky proxies...

I'm switching to BT "Total" Broadband (expected to get 5mbps) so we shall see...

I get about the same as Jon - but im only on a 4mb link with NTL, so i dont expect much more. Many other sites offer speeds significantly less than that :(

Is this UKTS..........or are you talking in general.

My connection alters..........but my point is UKTS is always half the speed of other sites.

Lastnight 350/700
Tonight 250/500

I'm not a premium member very often, but it was always my understanding that you received full bandwidth, for your membership fee.

Cheers
Jon

Hi Martin
What speed do you get , if you download a file off UKTS?......(I'm guessing around 380kb/s).

Hi g0fthick
469kb/s is nearly half your line speed (like mine)

Cheers

I would presume that the slowing down is due to the internal network at EV1 just generally slowing things down.

Also it may be the pond slowing things down too.

I am on NTL 4mb, so I am with Laurie here, UKTS seems fine.
Many other sites offer speeds significantly less than that
Thats what I find as well.

One thing to remember is that NTL's 10mb service is still (from what I hear) very hit and miss.

When Matt gets home, I suspect he will have a look at this anyway.

Jon
Try starting the UKTS download first, then another one afterwards and then post the screenies Please.

Hi Glyn
Yes I hadn't noticed till my line speed was upped to 8Mb...........plus I'm not usually a premium member.
Allowing for different rates at different times of day, UKTS seems to be constantly half what the line is capable of.
Its more of interest than anything , small downloads makes only seconds difference.
Even the largest hosted file only adds two minutes.
I expect the server needs restarting...or similar.
Having said that, we've been lucky this time usually when Matt's away the thing crashes altogether. So at least the new server has been more reliable. :P
Cheers

You are on NTL 10mb not 8, as they dont do an 8mb service.

387 kb/s + 681 kb/s = 1068 kb/s where is the problem there then ?

Try what I have suggested above.

Hi Glyn
Sorry missed your reply...didn't get an email for some reason.
No I'm not on NTL..........I'm not in a cable area.
I'm on ADSL........max 8Mb....different line speed at different times of day.
The first two screenshots are not at the same time....but are the same file....with about 2 mins apart.
Its coming at 681kb/s from the French site.........but only 387Kb/s from UKTS.
Second screenshot is at the same time....and I did start the UKTS download a split second first.
As you can see the French download will finish much quicker.
Cheers

Dont know about any1 else but when using firefox, it starts very high (800kb) and gradually slows down to nearer 2/300....

I am on 8mb broadband that claims to be at 4.2mb speed on my computer

Go here and it will tell you your actual speed. They never actually reach the full speed your ISP quotes!!! Those cheats!!

My ISP claims my line will do 6mb - which is around 480kb/s which is what i get normally :)

Their speed test claims I get 4.56mb

and http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp claims I get a measly 3.5mb/s!!!! and 370kb/s download speed!!!

DONT TRUST YOUR ISP!!!

Hi Richard
They are not cheating...ADSL is always a theoretical maximum.
This time of the evening is very busy.
If your still up at gone 01:00 hrs try it then
I usually get nearly 700 kb/s (on a 8M/b line)
But my point is never over 350kb/s from UKTS....whatever time of day.
Cheers
