I have the Saitek Cyborg EVO stick (USB) and a set of older Thrustmaster pedals which are very solidly constructed but use a gameport, which my system doesn't have. I bought a gameport to USB connector cable but I found the pedals were well out of calibration and I couldn't fix that. I may have to add an extra trimpot to the pedal's potentiometer, to make the necessary fine adjustments. The EVO stick is brilliant and very stable.
I guess you can use pedals (very pricey) so long as they are USB. I kept forgetting which way to push on the rudder pedals, a damned nuisance on finals, so I prefer the twist rudder control on the EVO.
Many years ago when I was at secondary school we still had school cadets once a week. Hated it until I wangled the radio ops platoon, otherwise known as the blind leading the blind. Foot drill, I never remembered which foot was left or right, along with 50% of the other foot sloggers.
Cheers Bazza

The user manual for the X-52 actually points out the lockable twist-rudder so that it can be used with pedals!
Take a look at the Saitek website to see some incredibly gorgeous looking X-52 style pedals! They ain't cheap, but they've got working toe-brakes included. I'm saving the pennies for a set.
