Restoring MSTS

When I minimize msts to do something else it will work, however when I restore it, it just comes up with a black screen.

Any ideas why.

Hi there msts does not like been minimized,if you want to do somethink else on your pc dont run msts

I use the windows key, it minimises MSTS without any problems after words.

If you are using XP, use the 'windows key' + 'm' to minimise.

I allways found minimises msts and going to do somethink else Allways causes msts to crash

I just dont do it anymore

You can always run MSTS in a window, then you can run anything you like in the background, or preferably run two monitors and you can have MSTS on one (in a window) and run something else on the other.

I use Alt-Tab to drop MSTS to the task bar and again to restore it.

You may have a problem minimizing and restoring MSTS if other programs are running in the background, a live Internet connection, firewall or virus checker, etc.

I think its just one of thoses cases where msts works differently on different pc,s

I press alt + tab together to minimise. It even works while driving.

I also use Alt-Tab to minimise MSTS. When I'm adjusting things like lights and smoke there's no better method. All I make sure of doing is to be in the scenario choosing screen when I Alt-Tab out. If the program doesn't return I sometimes use the Ctrl-Alt-Del sequence to bring up the Process Viewer and I'll use the Switch-to command. That usually brings it back so I can at least save and exit gracefully.

I read something on here when I first started simming that It was bad to minimise MSTS, as it could cause all sorts of problems

In the past, I've had problems restoring MSTS to a running state after ALT-Tab minimizing.

Currently all is fine although if it's been minimized for a while (overnight for example) it can take a while before it actually runs. I assume it's been spooled out and needs to be reloaded from the spool file.

I feel when it didn't restore properly in the past, it was probably caused by video driver problems rather than MSTS itself. Updating to the next ATI driver version usually fixed it. What would happen when it was acting up was after selecting MSTS as the program to activate, the screen would go black then a few things might happen, a crash back to the desktop with no more MSTS active, it might just hang and nothing would happen and I'd have to fight to kill the task blindly or MSTS might run just fine.

In my "Start" menu the very first task listed is &Run. If I'm lucky, I can press the "Start" keyboard button, cursor down once, press return and perhaps get a "Run" open (invisible of course). I then blindly type "taskkill -F -IM train.exe" and if all went well, MSTS dies and the computer is back to normal. If you wish to place &Run as the first item, Mouse select "Start" then drag the Run icon to the top left column and release. That's it, it's done (with XP anyway). Your mileage may vary and it doesn't always work first time. I think sometimes it may miss selecting the &Run option when I'm working blind. OH! I just discovered a better way! Because &Run is the my only Start Menu item starting with an "&", I can press the keyboard "Start" button then a "&"; that opens a Run prompt awaiting for the kill command to be typed

The above described method also works fine for those times MSTS crashes to the black screen and you try all the tricks in your book without success and end up rebooting.

With my current hardware/software combination all is well so I assume it will remain that way and I won't ever need to kill the MSTS task again anyway
