Now for something completely different ...
For those who like critters, an early UK diesel: Motor Rail's SIMPLEX
<IMG width="640" height="480" SRC="http://album.atomic-systems.com/showPic ... m_ss01.jpg">
<IMG width="640" height="480" SRC="http://album.atomic-systems.com/showPic ... m_ss02.jpg">
First built in the 1920s, some saw service as late as the 1960s, so it spans the great age of Steam and foreshasows the dominance of the diesels. Besides, it really is a very odd rail vehicle and a challenge to handle in the sim due to its weight and size.
Model comes with a virtual cab (360 deg view) and low enough in polys to work on most systems even with a good amount of detail.

Yeah, I thought so too the first time I saw one too. Here's a pic of one being recovered for restoration:

... John, you should recognize the engine at the other end of the train ...

How much weight will it pull - I can imagine it struggling with 1 carriage!
What with Decapods pump trolley, this and the little diesel inspection wagon people are subconsciously trying for a "puniest loco" award. Wonder where it will lead?

Surprisingly, for a unit that only boasts 40hp, it will handle a carriage quite nimbly, and there are photos of the prototypes doing exactly this type of duty.saddletank wrote:How much weight will it pull - I can imagine it struggling with 1 carriage!

The big problem isn't so much moving the carriage, but stopping it. Once the momentum has built up, when decelerating, the forward momentum of the carriage is greater than the stopping power of the 8 ton Simplex. You can see this in the sim as the carriage will push the engine and cause it's wheel's to slip. As in real life, the only fix for this is to move slowly.

A lovely model Sean, congrats - how do you find the time with a new baby around ?
I've got plans of something that looked similar to simplex, but is overhead electric that ran on the Hellingly Hospital railway (an asylum in Sussex). My dad is building it as a 5" garden railway model.
Now there's a small route begging - only 1.5 miles and two unique locos.
