Half my route has gone missing!!!

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Half my route has gone missing!!!

Post by NickCollier »

Please im going mad, i was just doing some general adding to get my route up to scratch for alpha release when in the process of saving through up an error and the program was terminated (just like in trains).
On restarting RE my route loaded "thew" i thought then as i began to guide myself around i noteced all the scenery had gone houses etc apart from non default objects "well some of them." what made it worse was the fact that the track work that was done and save previously was gone to, instead the marker lines remained where the track had been.
Ive spent the best part of 7months doing this route for the uk trainsimmers down south and i really thought i had made fine, the track work around lovers walk was picture perfect and so was the scenery.
i feel very annoyed that it just may of deleted the route altogether.
If anyone can help i will be most greatfull.

yours

Nick Collier

p.s one noticible thing was the fact track work done and save previously had also gone.

Well I've spend all day rebuilding track databases because of the ****** thing...Have you got any backups?

I've had what you are talking about once, and I couldn't do anything will it. You just have to keep loads of back-ups and hope for the best I'm afraid.

Sorry that's not very helpful. Try seaching Train-sim.com for a more techy answer.

Sounds like the quad tree/world files have been heavily corrupted.

Nope....The last one was a couple of months back when the trackwork was at littlehampton, this was going to be the last change before i did the backup, the trackwork was up to winchester and the scenery the same. as well as the line up to gatwick was 50 % done.

I think i will chuck it in now i dont think my mind can agonise over this anymore, need room on my hard-drive, maybe i will start all over but just do the London Victoria-Brighton line hopefully i can do that, and then any vr can use the virgin, theamslink, connex, tt,and new souther locomotives.

If any other suggestions can be made to lighten this route aimed for the microsoft trash can i will review it. 4 now i will do what some 1 else has been doing for a while "drowning kittens"

Thanks going north it is really appreciated.

Delete TDB and backup (well save them somewhere else) and rebuild track database by going to the advanced option as RE starts.

Then backup your world folder, go into it, delete all the w files and rename all the bk files to w files.

Open route. All your scenery should be back.

This 1500 objects per tile limit is something I've heard before but have never had confirmed. The fact that someone else said there are 1900 objects on the Washington tile in NEC (I have not confirmed that) gives a different answer.

Which is it? (note I'm at 1485 objects in a tile which is not behaving itself!!!). Have you any proof / good evidence?

Cheers

I have not seen any absolut truth about the size or number of a world file. Hovewer, there is a limit of something, so when getting near the limit, you need to be extra careful. I use following methode:

* Save after every major action, but not longer time than every 10 minutes.

* Always, always take a backup of the complete route before starting editing in the route. This I always do, and saves in a folder outside the MSTS folders, so any new installation of MSTS will not destroy the backups. I always have 5- 10 backups in diiferent stages. In this way, you are always protected, no matter what happens in the work. Reason for having multiple backups is if there should be some fault that you dont discover until later, in this case it is very good to have several generations of backups.

* Name the backup folders with date and some short description, so it is easy to see whats in it.

* Dont work longer than apprx 2 hour pass, then reboot. (depending on how much memory you have.. I have 1GB) RE is eating memory, unfourtanly.. If you are doing heavy terrain changes, I discover that a reboot needs to be done earlier.

* If the window starts to be black, then the memory is out. Stop editing immidiate! I normaly quits without saveing in this case, since it is risk that the route will be corrupted if you do not have memory to play with. If you have done save according to the first bullet, you only lose 5-10 minutes of work.

Cheers,

Mats

Mazzz - you ought to copy and paste that post into the New Route Builders Please Read thread. Just the kind of thing peeps should know before getting too far into route building.
